Juan Martin del Potro has undergone knee surgery according to his communications team. The Argentine underwent surgery this morning in Bern, Switzerland with the surgery being conducted by Dr. Roland Biedert.

According to his team, the former US Open champion has been in contact with Dr. Biedert since January with the doctor telling del Potro to opt for surgery during their first meeting. The 31-year-old even tested his knee while moving on the court, but the pain persisted.

Knee Injuries Persisting

Del Potro first suffered problems with his knee during the 2018 Shanghai Rolex Masters. He retired with knee issues after dropping the first set against Borna Coric and withdrew from the remainder of the season.

The knee issues continued into the 2019 season forcing his withdrawal from the Australian Open and making him unable to defend his titles in Acapulco and Indian Wells. At the Fever-Tree Championships, he suffered a fractured kneecap against Denis Shapovalov. The fractured kneecap has kept him out of tennis since suffering it and is now undergoing another surgery on the right knee.
