fter parting ways with assistant coach Jonas Bjorkman in December, attentions have turned towards who Andy Murray will appoint to replace him. Murray was reportedly looking for a coach who could travel with and practice alongside the Scot following his Australian Open final defeat.

It has come to the light that the man likely to takeover this role is British coach  Jamie Delgado.

Who Is Delgado And What Does He Bring To The Table?

The 38-year-old would be an ideal candidate to coach Murray when head coach Amelie Mauresmo is unavailable. Delgado only recently retired as a professional, making him a sparring partner of respected quality. The pair get on well with each other on a personal level and Delgado watched Murray’s matches in the second week of the Australian Open. He sat apart from the rest of the Murray team in the player’s box.

The former Davis Cup player for Great Britain has only recently became available after splitting company with world number 42 Gilles Muller last week following a fruitful partnership.

While nothing has been confirmed yet, it seems that he would be an ideal fit in the Murray camp as they already know each other well. That makes life easier for the British number one as he prepares to adjust to life as a father in the coming weeks.

A Tough Fortnight Down Under

It was a turbulent time for Murray during his campaign in Melbourne. He had to deal with wife Kim’s absence and the constant worry for how she was managing as the expected date for the birth of their first child draws closer. Following the collapse of Nigel Sears during Ana Ivanovic’s match against Madison Keys, he would have been forgiven for packing his bags and flying home on the middle weekend to be with his father-in-law (Sears) and Kim.

However, due to Sears improved condition, Murray stayed and produced a fantastic display of tennis to go all the way to the final. he dealt with all the adversity admirably. What is left for the world number two to dwell on now though is the challenge of taking on and defeating Novak Djokovic. Perhaps Delgado’s potential appointment can lead to this goal becoming a reality.
