Northampton Town have signed sacked Leicester City goalkeeper Adam Smith on a two-year deal.

Smith was one of three players sacked by the Premier League club following a racist sex video that was filmed on their end-of-season tour in Thailand.

James Pearson and Tom Hopper were the other two players to be sacked and now Northamton have offered Smith a second chance.

Smith shows great remorse

Talking about the incident, Smith said that he was "deeply ashamed" of what had happened, and "sorry" for getting himself in that situation with his teammates.

Hopper has since signed for Scunthorpe United, but Pearson remains without a club.

Hoping to repay the faith

Smith will be hoping to repay the faith shown in him by manager Chris Wilder as he looks to repair his reputation. Speaking to BBC Radio Northampton, the goalkeeper described his relief that the manager had "given [him] a second chance", and said he would work hard to repay the faith "in the training ground and on the pitch", if selected.

To prove that he made a dreadful mistake, Smith has offered to get involved with the club's anti-racism projects, but at the same time has suggested that the media twisted what happened. Smith says the incident involved "one comment, which wasn't made by [him]."

Looking with one eye to the future, Smith suggested that if he puts in "the performances on the pitch" then he can work to restoring his relationship with the fans, and that ultimately they can "get behind [him] and the rest of the lads."

Second chances

Speaking about the decision to bring Smith to the club, Wilder described the player as an “outstanding young goalkeeper" who can definitely improve the club, but also suggested that Northampton will be "trying to add another one."

Wilder suggest that Smith should come in and "get his head down and work hard" if he wants opportunities to play for the first team shirt, suggesting that he "has to be judged on that." Clearly the Northampton boss believes "there is a second chance for everybody" and is offering Smith the chance to grab it.

Smith is the Cobblers fifth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Josh Lelan, David Buchanan, Nicky Adams and Alfie Potter.
