Leeds United have created competition for Marco Silvestri by signing former Chelsea goalkeeper Ross Turnbull.

Turnbull, 30, joined from Barnsley on a free transfer and played 80 minutes of Leeds's 1-1 draw at York City on Wednesday evening.

He conceded just seconds before he was replaced by Charlie Horton, who was recently signed from Cardiff City and will play in the Development team next season.

A solid performance in pre-season

Leeds manager Uwe Rosler told the Yorkshire Post after the game that Turnbull had done "very well" in a "solid" and "experienced" performance, citing those two attributes in particular as being vital to his squad.

The former England youth international had 12 months remaining on his deal at Barnsley but the Tykes were keen to get him off the wage bill.

It is likely Silvestri will remain as the number one with Turnbull signed as cover following the departure of Stuart Taylor. But if should he put up some impressive performances, he may be given the chance to start ahead of the Italian.

Silvestri remains number one

Rosler assured fans that Silvestri would start the new season as first choice having gotten "stronger and stronger" over the course of last season, but reminded the Italian that only "good performances" will allow him to keep the number one shirt.

Turnbull has become Leeds's sixth summer signing following the arrivals of Charlie Horton, Sol Bamba, Chris Wood, Lee Erwin and Tom Adeyemi.

He is a vastly experienced keeper who spent much of his time with Middlesbrough before departing to Chelsea in 2013 where he remained until 2013. He then joined Doncaster to be first choice before moving onto Barnsley last summer. Leeds have become his ninth club after spells at Boro, Darlington, Bradford, Crewe, Cardiff, Chelsea, Doncaster and Barnsley.

Leeds are now focusing on more signings, with Bastia's Floyd Ayite the latest player to be linked with the club.

Following their draw at York, Leeds face Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday.
