The former Rochdale, Rotherham United and Reading striker arrived in Cardiff last summer for £2.5 million with a reputation of being one of the finest finishers in the Football League. However, one year on, the story didn't go to plan.

Le Fondre has netted over 150 goals during his career, but managed only three last season with the Bluebirds before departing for Bolton Wanderers on loan. He went onto score eight goals in 17 games as he rediscovered the goalscoring touch that deserted him in a Cardiff shirt.

Le Fondre admits it hasn't been good enough

The forward said he didn't regret his decision to join Cardiff City, but admitted his performances "have not been good enough".

Speaking to Wales, Le Fondre suggested it was a "little bit of a black mark" against his usual high standards. for me on my career. I’ve been a success at every club I’ve been at, apart from Cardiff.

He says it has left a "bitter taste" in his mouth, as he'll look back on it in the future and think about what "could have been, what should have been" with the Welsh club.

Manager Russell Slade says the 28-year-old's future will "ideally" be sorted out before City host Fulham in their Championship opener in three weeks time.

Fundraising campaign started to sign the striker

Some Bolton fans have now begun an campaign to raise £500,000 to help their club sign the striker. Although the current total stands at just £575, the efforts of a small group of fans is testament to how successful his loan spell up north was.

Le Fondre admits he needs to "rebuild" his reputation after a difficult spell at the Cardiff City Stadium. He needs to find the form which saw him score 12 Premier League goals for Reading in the 2012/13 season.

The striker that all Football League fans know can be brought back but it seems that he can't flourish in a Cardiff City shirt, and it's no surprise he's seeking pastures new.
