Brentford will be looking to get their promotion push back on track after a disappointing start to the new season.

Their season started with Ipswich Town taking a surprising 2-0 advantage at Griffin Park, although the hosts managed to gain a point as they salvaged two late goals to prevent an embarrassing opening-day defeat.

However, the League Cup provided the Londoners with a banana skin of a tie, with Oxford United standing in the way of their progression to the second round. Again, in front of their eager home supporters, they disappointed. Oxford came away with a massive shock, a place in the second round of the League Cup, and an emphatic 4-0 win against a side biding for Premier League inclusion.

Bristol City, the side recently promoted to the Championship, started their new campaign in disappointing fashion too. An opening day defeat at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday was followed with a crushing defeat to Luton which saw Bristol crash out of the League Cup.

Bristol City keeper Ben Hamer could be in line to make his Robins debut, while Joe Bryan should return after picking up a knock in last weekend's defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.

Andre Gray's proposed move to Hull City may mean he is unlikely to play, while recent signing Andreas Bjelland could be out until the end of the season with a serious knee injury.

Recent form

Being the home side, Bristol City will have a level of expectancy to grab all three points this weekend. The former League One side only experienced defeat on home soil twice last season in the league, and although the step up to the Championship is a big ask, the fortress created at Ashton Gate is one that should not be underestimated.

Meanwhile, Brentford will need to step up their away days with the Londoners suffering eight defeats on the road last season, with only 36 out of a possible 69 points gained while on their travels.

Transfers

Bristol City have been active so far in the transfer window, however their latest pursuit is of Dwight Gayle of Crystal Palace. Crystal Palace recently accepted an £8million offer for Gayle from Bristol City, although it is believed that the striker will reject the chance of dropping down to the Championship, with his focus being on remaining a Premier League footballer.

Their attention could soon turn to Brentford`s Gray, who has been subject to much interest from recently-relegated Hull City. Although the striker has been in the press for some time, the Brentford man has travelled to face Bristol City, but it is unknown whether or not he will play.

Head-to-head

The last time these sides met was back in the 2013/2014 season, when both sides were playing in League One. Brentford took all three points on both occasions with a 2-1 win at Ashton Gate, while a 3-1 win was the outcome in the return fixture at Griffin Park.
