Former Burnley midfielder Jeff Hendrick is reportedly nearing a move to Newcastle United on a free transfer, with the Republic of Ireland international set to remain in the Premier League despite having been previously linked with a move abroad.

Hendrick left Burnley following after his contract ran out in June and with the Clarets not having been able to agree a new deal with him, he left the club and was not able to play a part in their remaining league matches.

It is no surprise that the versatile former Derby County midfielder has attracted interest from other teams being available on a free, but it looks like it will be Newcastle that will benefit from his experience and versatility.

Newcastle supporters might have been envisaging more high profile arrivals when they were still subject of takeover talks. However, now that a takeover has been put on hold this seems like a good addition for the Magpies under the financial constraints they will be under.

Hendrick is a player who will suit the style of play that Steve Bruce has instilled at St James' Park. With the midfielder bringing the work rate and defensive instincts that Newcastle demand from their players to provide a platform to pick up points.

The Republic of Ireland international was never really given a real run in Burnley's side in his more natural number eight role. Instead Hendrick was able to perform efficiently on the right-hand side and also in the number ten position.

Burnley will now need to look for a replacement for Hendrick, with Huddersfield Town's Lewis O'Brien being linked. While Newcastle should benefit from having the midfielder's qualities within their squad.

Supporters of the Clarets will wish Hendrick all the best. He was a loyal servant to the club and always put the team before his individual performance. Many fans were frustrated by Mike Garlick's inability to agree an extension with Hendrick and will be frustrated to see the 28-year-old walk to a rival on a free.
