Manchester City Under 21's will face Mansfield Town, Scunthorpe United and Lincoln City in the EFL Trophy group stage.

The young Blues will take part in the competition for the fourth successive season, having qualified from the group stage in two of the three past EFL Trophy campaigns.

City will play all three of the group games away from the City Football Academy at the home of their opponents.

Facing Familiar Foes

The Citizens face familiar opposition in Scunthorpe after the two side's met in last season's competition. It was the Lincolnshire outfit who prevailed in that one as the League One side ran out 3-1 victors over Gareth Taylor's side in the round of sixteen in February back in February of this year.

Despite an impressive performance from the City youngsters in the second half, captain, Tommy Doyle's penalty wasn't enough as 'The Iron' had already stamped their experience on the tie after netting three quick goals in the first half. As a result, there is no doubt that the Blues will be out for redemption when the two meet in this year's competition.

Young Blues Looking to Better Past Success

City's Under-21 outfit will be hoping to replicate their best EFL Trophy performance from the 2018/19 campaign, where the Blues youngsters were the best finishing Under-21 competition after reaching the quarter final stage.

Gareth Taylor's side defeated Crewe Alexandra and Tranmere Rovers in the group stage of the 2018/19 competition, before defeating Barnsley and Rochdale in the knockout stages.

The young Blues' impressive cup run finally came to end in the quarter-finals of the competition after they were defeated 2-0 by competition finalists and eventual finalists Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

The first round of group stage matches will take place on the 8th of September and will run through until the 11th of November.
