VAVEL understands that Mikel Arteta has elected Martin Ødegaard as his club captain after impressing, both on and off the pitch in the 2021/22 campaign.

Arsenal players are set to return to London Colney on the 4th of July for pre-season training and then a selection of players will be taken on the club's first part of pre-season, a training camp in the centre of Germany.

Martin Ødegaard will be alongside a host of players from the Arsenal U23s and first-team that make the journey to mainland Europe for their first training camp of pre-season.

It could be argued that Ødegaard is at the beginning of his career but nonetheless he is already a mature character and he already is the skipper of the Norweigan National Team. Last season, when elected to take the armband, the Arsenal playmaker insisted that it is a big deal to be captain of Arsenal. Ødegaard said: 'I take that as a big compliment, but beyond that, I do the same as always'.

Behind the scenes at the training centre, Martin Odegaard has been an integral part of the development of Arsenal's fringe players and has shown great leadership qualities with the U23 players when they have joined first-team training.

It is understood that Mikel Arteta would like to retain a 'leadership group' at the football club with four other possible captains.
