The Carolina Hurricanes are a United States professional ice hockey team based in Raleigh, North Carolina. They compete in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL) and play their home games at PNC Arena.

The team was founded in 1972 in the defunct World Hockey Association (WHA) as the New England Whalers and was based in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1979 the Whalers joined the NHL and changed their name to the Hartford Whalers.
