While it is very uncommon to see injured players moved at the trade deadline, it is possible. In fact, it can be much more possible than many fans may realize, and it could happen within the next few days.

Andy Martino of New York's Daily News reports that New York Mets pitcher Zack Wheeler could be the biggest name as he is rumored to be discussed in deals for hitters. This news comes despite the fact that the right-hander is out for the season.

Wheeler will be 25 when he pitches next in the Majors as he is currently recovering from Tommy John surgery, which he had performed in March. He is not expected back on a Major League roster until well into the 2016 season.

Wheeler is a right-handed pitcher with four to five average to above-average pitches, and he has shown plenty of potential for the Mets. He has only one year of service time, meaning he is under team control for at least the next five seasons.

It is not definite that the Mets can or will trade Wheeler at this point as Marino notes. Martino's sources indicate that trade discussions are little more than that -- discussions. Martino writes,

"...the Mets have talked about Wheeler in trade discussions this month but remain unlikely to move him. Still, the very possibility shows that the team is still seeking a bat and perhaps a big one."

Wheeler finished last season with 187 strikeouts, a 3.54 ERA, and an 11-11 record on a struggling Mets team. New York now has Matt Harvey back along with young stars Noah SyndergaardJacob DeGrom, and Stephen Matz (currently out injured). Mets starters are ranked fifth in the National League in ERA at 3.49 ERA as play begins on July 25, but the offense does not give them much run support. The Mets' offense is dead last in the National League in runs scored (3.41 runs per game). The Mets have a big need for hitting, and Wheeler could bring back a bat in return.

According to Martino, the Mets reportedly discussed Wheeler with the Cincinnati Reds, likely in a deal involving Jay Bruce, though Bruce's name has not been reported. Rumor also has it that Wheeler may have been discussed in a Carlos Gomez deal with the Milwaukee Brewers.

One other option, which currently does not have any legs, involves the Detroit Tigers in a deal revolving around Yoenis Cespedes. This will be more likely discussed when the Tigers officially go into selling mode (or buying mode) later this week.

Other names the Mets have been connected to recently include Troy Tulowitzki and Ben Zobrist. While it would likely take more than Wheeler to get either of them, Wheeler could be a part of a large deal that would net the Mets their best shortstop since Jose Reyes departed when Shea Stadium was still in use.
