Mexico's domestic cup kicked off with the first round of matches that saw some Liga Asenso teams taking it to their Liga MX counterparts.

Group 1

In Group 1, we saw the last team to be relegated against the last team to be promoted as Liga Asenso side UDG made a complete sweep of Liga MX side Dorados. UDG won the first leg 2-1 away in Sinaloa and followed that up with another 2-1 win at home in the second leg to give them all six points and one bonus for winning the aggregate match-up. Dorados still finds themselves winless and pointless in all competitions. At least in the Copa MX, they’ve found a way to score a few goals.

In the other matchup in Group 1, Juarez of Liga Asenso also beat their Liga MX side Chivas in the first leg winning 1-0 at home. In the return leg, Chivas won by the same scoreline. Because they finished tied on aggregate and away goals, no one gets the bonus point. For Chivas at least, they won their first match of the year and didn’t blow a lead.

Next Copa MX matchups sees Dorados face Juarez while it’s an all Guadalajara battle as Chivas face UDG.

Teams Played Wins Lose Draws Points
UDG 2 2 0 0 7
Juarez 2 1 1 0 3
Guadalajara 2 1 1 0 3
Sinaloa 2 0 2 0 0

Group 2

While in Liga MX they’ve struggled to find consistency, Tijuana was able to do the double duty on Murcielagos by winning both legs. The first one was a good 2-0 away victory while the second was a come from behind 2-1 victory. With both wins, they were able to get the six points and the bonus point for the complete seven.

The other matchup pinned Liga MX side Atlas against Liga Asenso team Tepic. The second division side went into Jalisco stadium and beat Atlas 2-1 in convincing fashion to give them a big first leg win. In the return side the teams battled out to a nil-nil draw which gave Tepic four points and the bonus point for winning the two legged series.

In round two, Tepic plays Tijuana while Murcielagos takes on Atlas.

Teams Played Wins Lose Draws Points
Tijuana 2 2 0 0 7
Tepic 2 1 0 1 5
Atlas 2 0 1 1 1
Murcielagos 2 0 2 0 0

Group 3

Monterrey faced off against Atletico San Luis in the first round and the second division side pulled off a first legged upset to beat Monterrey 1-0 away. In the return leg, Monterrey were able to return the favor and win by the same scoreline. With both teams winning away by the same score, they each get three points and no one gets the bonus point.

In the first leg of Celaya and Pachuca, the two teams shared the spoils after a 1-1 draw in Guanajuato. In the second leg, the Liga MX side made a meal of things early on but were able to come back and win 2-1. Thus, they took the three points in the second leg and the extra point for winning the overall aggregate.

In round two, Celaya plays Monterrey while Pachuca and Atletico San Luis do battle.

Teams Played Wins Loses Draws Points
Pachuca 2 1 0 1 5
Atletico San Luis 2 1 1 0 3
Monterrey 2 1 1 0 3
Celaya 2 0 1 1 1

Group 4

Round 4 saw Zacatecas take on Morelia, where the first match ended in a draw. In the return, defense became an afterthought as Morelia and Zacatecas traded goals in a nine score thriller that saw the Liga Asenso side win 5-4, winning the aggregate battle 6-5 and collecting the extra point.

Leon and Necaxa didn’t share goals the way their group rivals did, but in the first leg Leon dominated in a 5-0 drubbing. In the second leg, Necaxa returned the favor and defeated Leon 4-1 to collect three points. While they each won, the six goals scored from Leon was enough to see them win the extra point.

Next round, Leon and Zacatecas do battle while Necaxa and Morelia take each other on.

Teams Played Wins Loses Draws Points
Zacatecas 2 1 0 1 5
Leon 2 1 1 0 4
Necaxa 2 1 1 0 3
Morelia 2 0 1 1 1

Group 5

In a tight two legged battle between Veracruz and Oaxaca, the first leg saw Veracruz take away a 1-0 win in the final few minutes. The return leg was a back and forth tilt which was 2-2, before a late goal allowed Veracruz to take all the points in added time to get the maximum seven points.

In the other group match, the battle was just as interesting between BUAP and Chiapas. BUAP came back in the first leg to win 2-1. In the second leg, Chiapas lost a two goal lead in the first half, and another lead in the second half before drawing 3-3, leaving them with one point from two matches. By winning the aggregate series, BUAP gets five.

Oaxaca and Chiapas face off next round while BUAP and Veracruz will meet in the other matchup.

Teams Played Wins Loses Draws Points
Veracruz 2 2 0 0 7
BUAP 2 1 0 1 5
Chiapas 2 0 1 1 1
Oaxaca 2 0 2 0 0

Group 6

In the only group that has three Liga Asenso teams, Tapachula and Atlante faced off in the first round match up. They would completely share all the spoils as they drew 1-1 in both matches leaving them dead tied with two points and no extra point for either.

Venados and Cruz Azul played in the other matchup, and Venados would stun Cruz Azul in the first match to get a 2-1 win. In the return leg, the Liga MX side would get their first win in any competition with a 1-0 win at home. The narrow win was enough to not only get three points but also get the bonus point and edge out Venados for top spot in the group.

In the second round Venados and Tapachula face off as Cruz Azul and Atlante also do battle.

Teams Played Wins Loses Draws Points
Cruz Azul 2 1 1 0 4
Venados 2 1 1 0 3
Atlante 2 0 0 2 2
Tapachula 2 0 0 2 2
