The Memphis 901 isn't playing very well in the USL Championship regular season. The team's in the last position with 15 points less than Charlotte Independence. Remember that Charlotte Independence is the last club in the qualifying zone for the playoffs in Group G.

This Friday, striker Rafael Mentzingen spoke to VAVEL USA that it was an atypical Memphis 901 season and doesn't portray reality.

"I think it was an atypical season due to the smaller number of games. We knew that each game was very important, but we made mistakes at the end of the games. Many matches we started winning and ended up suffering a draw or defeat. A campaign that doesn't do justice to the quality of our team".

The USL Championship was paused due to the coronavirus pandemic from March to July.  In the opinion of the Brazilian soccer player, this affected the performance of the team in the competition.

"No doubt, but I don't see it as an excuse. All teams went through it just like us. I think it hindered the interaction and the physical preparation of our team who has very experienced players"

There are only two games to end the regular season. Memphis 901 will play against Charlotte Independence and Birmingham Legion. Two difficult and worthless games for Memphis in the competition.

"They're strong opponents and will be in the playoffs, but at the same time they're teams we already dominated and we were unable to win a few weeks ago. Despite being games just to fulfill the championship, the mentality is to get the 6 points. I think the focus is still on finishing these games in the best possible way and then focusing on the next season".

When asked who's the favorite for the USL Championship title, Rafael was conservative in his response.

"I think Louisville City is one of the big favorites for this year. Experienced team that grows at the right time".

The Memphis 901 plays this Saturday at 7 pm to play the penultimate match of the regular season against Charlotte Independence at the Sportsplex at Matthews.
