Fernando Torres was the star man as Mourinho guided his Chelsea side to a massive victory over League rivals Manchester City.

Chelsea started the stronger side, had good passing and kept possession, while City waited to counter.Demichelis looked to impress on his debut, however found it difficult with Chelsea breaking out of the blocks at an uncontrollable speed with intricate passing.

Chelsea’s first effort at goal came from Gary Cahill, who was brought in for David Luiz, after some neat work from Oscar. His floated cross found Cahill, but the volley was lashed just over the bar.

Chelsea, in complete control, then found themselves attacking City in full flow, with a cross from the middle finding Torres on the edge of the box, but his effort was tame and was a comfortable save for Joe Hart.

City then struck up a good amount of possession before playing a ball from deep to David Silva who attempted to lash his cross in, but was cleared well by Ivanovic. City then managed to control the game for a few minutes, camping in Chelsea’s half during this time.

Aguero, playing as a lone striker, picked up a ball played to him in midfield and ran at John Terry, twisted and turned and had a shot at Petr Cech, who was not given a lot to do given Chelsea’s possession.

The game was overlooked by German legend Franz Beckenbauer who was in attendance at Stamford Bridge, someone who Pellegrini must’ve felt City could’ve used with Chelsea piling on the pressure and driving towards City’s defence.

Chelsea then pushed back after holding a high line and looked more and more likely to hit City on the counter.

Torres then had one of those chances he normally rues when missed, after some good defensive work by Ramires, he crossed the ball into the box, City held their defensive line and seemed to have successfully played Torres offside, but the striker brought down the ball and strangely skied his effort from not very far out, very disappointing from the man in form.

Not long after, Torres made a run from the left into the box, cut in and had a shot, only for his effort to smash against the crossbar. It seemed the game was not going to be his, once again.

However, Torres made amends, picking the ball up from outside the box and running at Gael Clichy, the Spaniard skinned City’s left-back to drill a cross along the floor, setting up Andre Schurrle to tap in his first Premier League goal for Chelsea.

It had been a while since the famous “Fernando Torres, Chelsea’s number 9” song rang around Stamford Bridge, but Chelsea fans were in full voice, showing their support to the rejuvenated Torres.

City started the 2nd half as Chelsea started the first, dominating possession, slipping through clever passes to Aguero, and finally one of those had put Aguero in a position to notch in another league goal, in what has proven to be a successful campaign for him so far. He picked up a clever pass from Silva, though it was played wide, and managed to smash in a left-footed attempt into the roof of Petr Cech’s net.

From then on, City looked a lot more comfortable, dominated possession and were able to express themselves freely, and looked the more likely side to score.

Chelsea did have a penalty shout waved away by Howard Webb, Javi Garcia then elbowed Torres which earned him a yellow card. The game found a balance in attack and defence from both sides.

Mourinho then made a double change at 65 minutes, Lampard went off for Mikel, Schurrle went off for Willian and later Hazard made way for Eto’o. Pellegrini made changes of his own with Jesus Navas coming on for Nasri.

Both sides were full of creation after the substitutions, but were both wasteful until the 90th minute when Willian’s clearance from City’s attack went towards Nastasic, who was able to play it safe by heading it back to keeper Joe Hart, however Hart advanced further than Nastasic anticipated, and the heavy touch from Nastasic meant the ball ran towards the goal, Fernando Torres taking advantage of this, slipping in behind Joe Hart to tap the ball into the net, earning Chelsea a valuable 3 points over League rivals City.

Chelsea now sit 2 point behind Arsenal in 2nd while City dropped to 7th after that loss.
