Watford have announced that Harry Kewell will take over the Hornets new under 21 squad, in a bid to help the squad develop some of their finest talent and nurture them to the first team as well as endeavour on their journey through the Under-21 Professional Development League 2 South division, which will see the club face the likes of QPR and Hull City.

First Appearance

Harry Kewell is likely to manage his youthful squad for the first time next week when they come up against Maidenhead United.

Why he was hired

Watford’s Sporting Director Luke Dowling said: “We are delighted that Harry has agreed to join us as our new Under-21 Coach.’’

“Harry enjoyed an extremely successful career as a player, and he now has a proven track record when it comes to working with and nurturing gifted young footballers.’’

“His knowledge and experience will be of great benefit to the club’s youth setup as a whole, and the talented players we have within our Under-21 group’’

His Career

Harry Kewell won 56 caps for his country, Australia, including appearing in the 2006 and 2010 World Cup, while the gifted winger also managed to play for Liverpool and Leeds in England, before moving to Turkey where he played for Galatasaray, before moving back to Australia to finish off his playing days.

The talented winger won a host of honours throughout his playing days, including a Champions League and FA Cup, while also picking up the PFA Young Player of the Year Award.

The Squad

The squad that the Australian is inheriting is flooded with talent, with the likes of likes of Dennon Lewis, Alfie Young and Mahlondo Martin providing eye catching moments throughout their careers to date. While Northern Ireland under 21 star Josh Doherty is likely to impress the new boss, Kewell, and will look to develop into a player capable of making an impression on first team boss Quique Flores.
