Leicester City have been a force to be reckoned with this season, with their attacking players Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez stealing most of the headlines.

Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has been their unsung hero recently though, with some excellent perfomances earning him a nomination for Barclays Premier League player of the month.

It's no secret that Leicester have been the surprise package this season, shooting to the top of the Premier League and hold that milestone with 14 games to go.

Along with this brilliant season for Leicester though their have been many stand out players and performances.

Recent results for Leicester though have been particularly good, and the Danish goalkeeper has been a real key to the Foxes powerful surge.

Over the January period, the keeper has recorded three clean sheets out of possible four with a number of crucial saves.

Two of the most noted games were the 0-0 draw with Bournemouth and the 3-0 victory at home to Stoke City.

Schmeichel becomes City's third player of this campaign to be nominated for this monthly award, the two others being Vardy and Mahrez.

In esteemed company

Of course though Schmeichel won't have this all his own way, the goalkeeper is in some pretty high quality company who are challenging him for the award.

Manchester City's Sergio Aguero is of course favourite for the award as he has been back at his best through January, scoring for fun and helping his side keep tabs on the top of the table.

Jermain Defoe of Sunderland is another who is up for the award, he has scored some crucial goals for the Wearsiders in January but still his side remain in a relegation scrap.

Some of the other names that Schmeichel is going head to head with is; Liverpool's Roberto Firmino, Tottenham Hotspur's Dele Alli and the Southampton centre-back Virgil Van Dijk.
