Aitor Karanka has made his 11th edition to his Middlesbrough side today by announcing the loan signing of Calum Chambers from Arsenal.

The defender, who made his name at Southampton in the 2013/14 Premier League season, cost Arsenal £16 million two years ago and has made 36 league apperances for the Gunners since.

Kick-starting his career

Chambers will hope this transfer will revitalise his career which seems to have stagnated somewhat in North London.

Boro are, however, getting a good player. Chambers has experience in the Premier League, which of their current defenders only Dani Ayala can offer. Chambers has also played along side Ben Gibson for England's under-21s in 2015 as well as gaining three caps for England's senior side.

Middlesbrough have had success with signing Premier League defenders. Keneth Omeruo excelled in his first loan spell on Teesside and Tomas Kalas also impressed while at the Riverside.

These player, however, were not starters for Karanka and it would seem that Chambers is being signed as backup.

It is not clear what the Hampshire born defender's best position is, but with Middlesbrough have had troubles at centre back. Full-back Antonio Barragan filled in for the injured Ayala for Boro's first two games of the Premier League season.

The hierarchy at Middlesbrough obviously see Chambers as a solution to this, while also providing back up to Barragan and Emilio Nsue at right back.

An exciting couple of days for fans?

This has been one of the busiest transfer windows in recent memory for Smoggies and it could be about to heat up leaing into deadline day.

Karanka has made 11 signings this summer but has seen few players leave Teesside, but that could be about to change.

Albert Adomah and Jordan Rhodes are two players who have been linked away from the club heavily in the past few days. There has been speculation that Adomah has been unsettled and a move to Aston Villa has been circulating.

Rhodes has also been linked to numerous Championship clubs in recent weeks. These are the most likely candidates to be sold by Middesbrough, while loan moves for players such as Adam Reach and Alex Baptiste could be on the cards, after young striker Bradley Fewster joined Hartlepool United on loan earlier today.

There has been little talk of an incoming striker, which could pour cold water on the talk of a Rhodes exit, while The Gazette reported earlier today that 'talks have taken place with an exciting young attacking midfielder.' They claim that an annoucement could be made 'in the next 24 hours.'
