Charlie Austin’s good form is putting him in line for an England call-up, if new national boss Gareth Southgate recognises his latest form says Saints boss Claude Puel.

The hot shot striker has started this season on a high and continued that high point when netting in a 3-0 win at the Olympic Stadium against West Ham on Sunday, which was his fifth goal in four games.

Return to Haunt

Austin also turned provider for Dusan Tadic to wrap up the game against the Hammers, whose co-owner David Sullivan, admitted that he turned down signing Austin due to his injury record.

The Englishman was called up to the national squad last season for games against the Republic of Ireland and Slovenia, but boss Roy Hodgson did not give him any game time or a call up since.

With the Three Lions disappointing in France and embarrassingly being knocked out by small time Iceland, Hodgson was sacked and Sam Allardyce was brought in but events have seen him depart the position just after two games.

Austin big chance

Gareth Southgate has been brought in and has a decision to make with Spurs' Harry Kane injured which leaves a spot available for the World Cup qualifier against Malta and Slovenia.

The Frenchman has stated it clear that he “hopes”, Charlie will get selected and it is “important” for “Charlie and the team” to be selected due to him playing with high confidence at the minute.

England have four fixtures before the end of the year, meaning Austin has a few chances to earn his place in the side. Nathan Redmond and other in form Saints players may be hoping they can also break into Southgate's plans.
