Sean Longstaff believes that his side's bright start against AFC Bournemouth helped them to control the game for 90 minutes at the Vitality Stadium on Wednesday night.

Newcastle United scored after just five minutes through Dwight Gayle before Longstaff got his name on the scoresheet to put the Magpies two up on the half-hour mark.

Giving his post-match thoughts to NUFC TV, the Geordie midfielder reckons that the Magpies never looked in any danger.

"We started the game really well," Longstaff recalled.

"We played a lot of good stuff and we felt in control of the game from the start after Dwight scored early on to give us a boost.

"We controlled the game from there and thoroughly deserved the three points."

Righting the wrongs from Sunday

After Steve Bruce's men exited the Emirates FA Cup in disappointing fashion against Manchester City on Sunday, his players would have been keen to show improvement.

They certainly did that against a poor Bournemouth side and Longstaff feels that the fans have been repaid for their faith with this latest league triumph which saw the Magpies pass the 40 point mark.

"It was always going to be tough against Man City," the youngster admitted.

"This game was always going to be about our response and we did that well. It was perfect.

"We could have scored a few more goals in the second half but it was probably some of the best football we've played this season and we thoroughly deserved to win the game."

New role working wonders

From early on in the game on the South Coast it was evident that Longstaff was playing in a more advanced role than what supporters have become accustomed to.

However, this didn't seem to phase him in the slightest as he played a crucial role in Newcastle's opener before getting himself on target later on in the half.

"We set up in a slightly different way and I was a little bit more advanced," the midfielder revealed.

"It was all about getting after them as we knew they like to try and play so we thought that we could catch them if we pressed them high.

"The whole game was like that and even when I went off we continued so I thought that we played really well throughout."

What happens now?

The Newcastle management will now have to wait to see the extent of Longstaff's injury after he had to be withdrawn in the first half with a hamstring injury.

With the season not too far off a conclusion, there is a chance the local player could miss the remainder of the season.
