On Wednesday night, the final round of Championship fixtures will take place, with the game between Bristol City and Preston North End being the only one where both sides have neither promotion or relegation to play for.

That comes with a huge sense of disappointment for both clubs, who were hoping for a top six finish, whilst for large parts of the season, that looked likely for the two sides.

After a poor run of form towards the end of their campaign, Bristol City sacked manager Lee Johnson after their defeat to sixth placed Cardiff City, whilst North End boss Alex Neil is amongst the favourites to take his place at Ashton Gate, it certainly isn't the first time the Scot has been linked with a move away from Lancashire.

Under interim head coach Dean Holden, the Robins have picked up seven points out of a possible 12, although they did taste defeat for the first time under his leadership against Swansea City, last time out.

The Lilywhites had their play-off hopes dashed after Cardiff City picked up three points on the weekend, despite their 2-0 win against Birmingham City, which saw goals from Patrick Bauer and Brad Potts, as well as a first home clean sheet since September for Preston.

Team news

Nathan Baker injured his groin in the 1-1 draw with Stoke City last week and was unavailable for the Swansea defeat, he is unlikely to make this game either.

Filip Benkovic also missed out against the Swans and is a doubt for the season finale.

North End will have to wait and see whether key players Ben Pearson and Ben Davies will be able to recover from their recent injuries to play a part in the final game of the season, with both of their futures at the club currently up in the air, with 12 months left on their current deals.

Louis Moult will remain out after a long term absence, although is expected to be available for the start of next season.

Predicted line-ups

Bristol City: Bentley, Vyner, Williams, Kalas, Hunt, Smith, Paterson, Dasilva, Palmer, Afobe, Wells.

Preston: Rudd, Fisher, Bauer, Storey, Rafferty, Johnson, Ledson, Barkhuizen, Browne, Maguire, Stockley.

Previous meetings

Preston have an excellent recent record against the Robins, especially away from home.

The Lilywhites are unbeaten in 13 league meetings with Wednesday's opponents and have won on their last five visits to Ashton Gate.

Bristol City have failed to win their final game in each of the last four seasons, since an 8-2 win against Walsall on the final day of the 2014/15 League One season.

The last game at Ashton Gate between these two sides saw North End come away as 1-0 winners, thanks to a goal from Callum Robinson, who had previously had a loan spell at Bristol City.

The last game that the two sides played against each other came at Deepdale earlier in the season, in what was an exhilarating encounter that ended 3-3.

The away side found themselves 2-0 up after 36 minutes, both goals came from set-pieces, with the hosts appealing for fouls on goalkeeper Declan Rudd on both occasions.

Paul Gallagher pulled one back in first half stoppage time from the spot, before a handball by Ashley Williams 10 minutes into the second half, gave the Lilywhites another penalty, this time it was Daniel Johnson who scored the spot kick.

The hosts then conceded from another set piece on the hour mark, with the ball falling to Nathan Baker who fired under Rudd, to give Johnson's men a chance to earn their first win over Preston since 2010.

Although, it wasn't to be on this occasion, with Bauer heading home with 20 minutes to go to ensure a share of the spoils.

Ones to watch

Nahki Wells:

Nahki Wells signed for Bristol City from Burnley for around £5 million in January , with a proven ability to score at this level, many Robins fans were hoping he could have been the difference to give them a top six finish this season.

Even though that has not happened, the striker scored 13 goals in the first half of the season with Queens Park Rangers, and has scored five goals in 12 league appearances so far for his new side, showing signs that with a full season under his belt at Ashton Gate, he is more than capable of scoring 15-20 goals in a single campaign.

His record against Preston isn't too bad either, he has faced North End six times in the Championship, scoring four goals, all coming in his time at Huddersfield Town.

Daniel Johnson:

Perhaps the biggest reason as to why Preston were not able to finish in a play-off position this season, is that they do not have a proven striker at this level, with Sean Maguire getting just four goals this campaign, the best out of their central strikers.

Although, part of the reason that they still came so close during this campaign, is because of the goals from midfielder Daniel Johnson.

Johnson, 27, has made 32 appearances in the Championship this season, scoring 12 goals, making him the top goal scorer at the club going into the final game on Wednesday.

He has also provided seven assists for his team mates in the league, and he will be hoping to add to his tally against Bristol City, whom he scored against last time out at Deepdale.

Pre-match comments

Preston boss Alex Neil expects a difficult game for his side, he believes the opposition players will be looking to impress their new manager, whoever that may be, he said:

I am pretty sure whoever their manager is going to be at Bristol, their players will want to do their very best to show what they can do.

I don’t know if anyone is going to be there, but even to their hierarchy, they will want to show that they want to stay on at the club and be there afterwards."

The former Norwich City manager is aware of some of the changes that have been made to Bristol City since Lee Johnson's departure.

Their system has gone back to a 3-5-2 for the majority of the games they have played.

They changed their system late against Swansea in their last game, but Lee played a 3-5-2 for large parts of the season as well, so there is not a lot of changes there.

Naturally, when you do spend money, it brings expectation and I think that is what has happened there. They have sold big as well, the likes of Kelly, Webster and Brownhill went for big money, but they have also invested heavily in their squad and in January."

Dean Holden is yet to comment on the game at this moment, but once he completes his press conference on Tuesday, we will have his thoughts on the season finale here.
