Exactly one decade ago today Liverpool, under the guidance of Roy Hodgson, were unceremoniously dumped out of the then Carling Cup by League Two side Northampton Town.

Ten years on and having recently clinched their first Premier League title to back up a sixth UEFA Champions League, it's safe to say there's quite a different landscape at Liverpool now.

This night at Anfield was, unfortunately, one of many disappointing during this period. Hodgson left the club three months later after an ill-fated time as the Reds boss and was replaced by Sir Kenny Dalglish.

  • The line-up

Liverpool's team unsurprisingly looked rather different than the one who convincingly beat Chelsea on Sunday to make it two wins from two.

Starting XI: Brad Jones (GK), Martin Kelly, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Daniel Agger, Dani Pacheco, Lucas Leiva, Jay Spearing, Milan Jovanovic, Ryan Babel, David Ngog. Substitutes: Martin Hansen, Jonjo Shelvey, Nathan Eccleston, Tom Ince, David Amoo, Andre Wisdom, Jack Robinson.

  • The match

Liverpool took an early lead through Serbian forward Milan Jovanovic before Billy Mckay equalised for the League Two side to take the clash to extra time.

Michael Jacobs gave the underdogs an early extra-time lead before Frenchman David Ngog took the match to penalties late on.

During the shootout in the pouring rain, two penalties were missed in the first five before current Nuneaton Borough player Nathan Eccleston blazed his effort onto the crossbar.

Ghanaian midfielder Abdul Osman, who is currently a free agent, scored the decisive spot-kick to send the Cobblers through to the fourth round and leave the lowly Reds licking their wounds.

Liverpool fans will be remembering this fixture and many others of the era with cold shivers.

However, 10 years on and with a superb football team on show, these memories act as dark reminders that we should enjoy these halcyon days while they last.
