Middlesbrough have confirmed that Jonathan Woodgate and Damia Abella have joined Rhys Williams in leaving the club at the end of their contracts this summer.

Williams, an Australia international, had already announced that he will return to his home country to represent Perth Glory, with veteran defenders Woodgate and Abella now left considering their options too.

Abella has spent much of the last two seasons with Williams in the medical room after both suffered long-term injuries last season, while Woodgate had been expected to leave the club at the end of 2014/15.

Emotional goodbye for Woodgate

He was brought on in the dying seconds of Boro's 3-0 play-off win over Brentford in an emotional goodbye to the fans, who serenaded him for the rest of the game with the chant "Johnny Woodgate is a red, he hates Geordies".

However a defensive crisis at the start of the new season meant Woodgate was needed as cover, so the former Real Madrid and Leeds United man remained at the Riverside for another year.

Loan players' departures confirmed

As well as the out-of-contract players, Boro also confirmed the departures of a number of loan stars whose time at the club has now officially ended.

Ritchie de Laet, Gaston Ramirez, Tomas Kalas, Kike Sola and Michael Agazzi have returned to their parent clubs after playing mixed roles in Boro's promotion campaign.

Ramirez, who is out of contract at Southampton, is likely to return to the club permanently this summer while Chelsea's Kalas has also stated that he would like to return for a third spell on Teesside.

Having made just one appearance between them, though, Sola and Agazzi are unlikely to be seen in the North East again.
