After winning promotion just over two weeks ago, a long list of names have already been linked to joining Middlesbrough, most of which have been nothing but speculation and rumours.

Today, however, the Gazette has commented that Middlesbrough are close to signing Ajax winger Viktor Fischer and that talks between Fischer and the club have already taken place.

Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported that a €5 million fee was agreed between the team who finished second in the Eredivisie and the team who finished second in the Sky Bet Championship.

Fischer impresses after injury lay-off

Fischer, who has scored 24 goals in 79 games for Ajax, has struggled with injuries over the past 14 months. After an operation on his hamstring he returned to Ajax's team at the back end of the 2015/16 season.

He still managed to net 11 times in all competitions last season, however. Before his injury, Fischer was considered one of Ajax's hottest young prospects and people were drawing similarities between Fischer and his Danish compatriot Christian Eriksen.

Although the Middlesbrough hierarchy will be hopeful that Fischer turns out to be just as good as Eriksen, all the Boro fans will be wishing for is that he will add balance and pace to the Boro side.

Boro lack balance in wide areas

With Albert Adomah being the only out-and-out winger in Boro's team, this has meant Stewart Downing or Cristhian Stuani have had to occupy a more unorthodox wide role in the 2015/16 season and meant that Boro's team has at times been very one-sided with most of the play coming down Adomah's flank.

The last time Middlesbrough can be said to have had a balanced team with two wingers firing was in Aitor Karanka's first season with the club, when Adomah and Mustapha Carayol ended the 2013/14 campaign with 20 goals between them.

Karanka will be very much wanting to sort out this aspect of his team. If reports are to be believed, Karanka has been looking at other players to come into the wide area, with Anderlecht's Dennis Praet having been linked and, Michail Antonio also mentioned by some media outlets.

Fischer, however, looks to be Karanka's number one target for the left-midfield position. And with the £3.8 million deal looking ready to be finalised, it seems that Fischer is set to be the first Dane to play on Teesside since Mikkel Beck left Middlesbrough for Derby County in 1999.
