Addison Russell drove home the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to give the Chicago Cubs (25-20) a 3-2 victory over the Washington Nationals (27-19) Tuesday night.

With Jonathan Herrera on second base and two outs, Russell laced a Matt Grace change up off the right-center field wall to drive home the game winner.

Herrera had reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on Ian Desmond's overthrow in attempt to complete a double play.

The game was tied at 1-1 after seven thanks to solo home runs from Chicago's Dexter Fowler (6) to lead off the bottom of the first and Washington's Bryce Harper (17) in the top of the seventh. Harper appeared frustrated as he popped the ball up, but with the wind blowing out, the ball carried into the new left-field bleachers to tie the game.

Denard Span put the Nationals ahead 2-1 with a solo shot of his own (5) in the top of the eighth, his second of the series. He homered to lead off Monday's game. The lead did not last, however, as Kris Bryant, who twice flew out to the center field warning track earlier, finally made sure no one would catch his ball.

Bryant's game-tyring home run (7) is the first to hit off Wrigley Field's new video scoreboard behind the left-center field bleachers.

Hector Rondon (W: 3-0, 3.43 ERA) picked up the win by pitching a scoreless ninth. He allowed a hit and struck out one. Cubs catcher Miguel Montero cut down Yunel Escobar trying to steal third to end the inning. Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks threw another gem, pitching seven innings of one-run, four-hit ball while walking two and striking out four. He served up Harper's home run.

Grace (L: 2-1. 2.25) pitched 2/3 of an inning in taking the loss. He gave up two hits, but the overthrow made the run unearned. As expected, Nationals starter Jordan Zimmermann pitched a brilliant game himself. Zimmermann allowed one run (Fowler's home run) on six hits in seven innings. He walked three and fanned five.

The series concludes Wednesday with each team trying to gain a series win. Washington's Max Scherzer (5-3, 1.67) will take on Chicago's Jon Lester (4-2, 3.56) in a battle of high-priced free-agent aces. The first pitch is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. EDT.
