The New York Yankees have beaten the Miami Marlins by a score of 2-1 with the help of a Michael Pineda gem at Yankee Stadium, in the Bronx, NY.  Michael Pineda pitched arguably one of the best games of his career tonight, taking a no hitter into the 7th before giving up a solo homerun to Christian Yelich. Michael Pineda finished with 100 pitches and 2 outs in the 7th, so even if he didn’t give up the homerun, given his injury history he most likely would’ve been given the 8th, especially if he had a quick inning, given his injury history. Christian Yelich also walked in the 4th to break up Pineda’s perfect game. Pineda induced an almost even ground ball to fly ball ratio getting 6 ground ball outs and 5 fly ball outs. With the win Michael Pineda improves to 8-3 on the year. Joe Girardi on the tough decision that he would’ve be forced to address as Pineda’s pitch count went up and the Marlin’s remained hitless, without the Yelich homer, said “I don’t think it’s a situation where you can let a guy throw 130, 140 pitches. It would be extremely difficult for me and I would feel bad, but sometimes as a manger you have to protect players from themselves.”

The Yankees got on the board in the 1st inning when Alex Rodriguez hit an RBI single up the middle for his 2,996th hit. The Yankees would get on the board again in the 5th when Carlos Beltran hit a bases loaded single scoring Chase Headley and Alex Rodriguez was thrown out trying to score from 2nd.  Rodriguez got on base with a singled for his 2,997th hit. In his next two at bats he walked, one intentionally. A controversial moment happened in the 8th inning, when Dee Gordon of the Marlins grounded to first and Garrett Jones, threw it home and home plate umpire Dale Hunter ruled Adeiny Hechavaria was safe at home, tying the game up, but Joe Girardi challenged the ruling and it was overturned. Dellin Betances replaced Justin Wilson in the 8th inning for the 5 out save, to put a cap on the 3 hit pitching gem, from up and down the Yankees pitchers tonight, except for Justin Wilson who gave up 1 hit and 1 walk in 3 batters.

The Yankees look to get another win, and sweep their home portion of the home and home against the Marlins tomorrow at Yankee Stadium, at 7:00 pm.  Tomorrow’s pitching matchup is C.C. Sabathia against Mat Latos. With the loss tonight the Marlins fall to 29-38 and the Yankees improve to 35-30.
