Invicta FC returned to Kansas City for their 14th event with a main event featuring the stout veteran Tonya Evinger (17-6). Currently the bantamweight champion for Invicta, she stopped the momentum of another emerging fighter in Pannie Kianzad (8-1). The fight would not be for the title due to Kianzad missing weight. It would not matter as the fight was dominated by Tonya who out worked the Denmark/Iran product with an array of ground work that was outmatched.

Tonya proved that no matter what the opponent brings to the table, she has an answer and is clearly one of the top bantamweights in the world. If Invicta wants one of their future stars to hold the 135 title belt, then they must find an answer for Triple Threat.

In the fight itself, Pannie started off with her precise striking but was immediately clinched and sent to the canvas by the stronger looking Evinger. From there, Tonya went to work with the ethic she is know for scoring at every available opportunity while looking for submissions that really kept Kianzad in trouble.

Pannie was able to survive the first round, but it wasn’t looking good for her. At the beginning of the second, Tonya dropped Pannie with a hard right which allowed her to inflict more damage on the ground. Soon, Kianzad's nose was bloodied and the pressure of Tonya was just too much. Soon, it was all over as referee John McCarthy stopped the fight after Evinger finishes on top with some vicious elbows and a hard laying hammer fist.

Kankaanpaa - Bennett

The co-main event for Invicta FC 14 was quite the grinder between Katja Kankaanpaa (10-3) and Deanna Bennett (8-0). Both girls went through beautiful exchanges on the mat and really fought a fight closer than the judges would lead you to believe. Katja used her jab and timely takedowns to mount her offense against the taller Bennett. Her only disadvantage with the takedowns was that she welcomed the guillotine attempt from Deanna.

Bennett used her foot work wisely to set up her striking, but it was mostly neutralized by the shoots of Katja. In the third round, Katja really gave her all and tried various key locks and rear naked chokes to no avail. It was a really good performance for both ladies, and it seemed as if Katja would be the victory. The announcers including Miesha Tate also believed the Killer Bunny won. Unfortunately, that was not the case as the judges created a head scratcher giving the unanimous decision victory to Deanna Bennett.

Other main card matchups

Roxanne Modafferi (18-12) redeemed herself after her recent lost to Vanessa Porto with an outstanding performance and victory over newcomer Marina Morais (9-3). Modafferi outstruck Morais on the feet and used her judo and experience to school her on the mat. Morais never mounted any offense and was able to scramble a few times underneath Roxy. Still, it was all Modafferi who completely controlled the fight and proved she is still ready to compete at the top of the division. Could it be a rematch with KGB on the horizon? Only time will tell.

Andrea KGB Lee (3-1) put on a hell of a display of all-around mixed martial arts skill with her fight against Rachael Ostovich (2-2). Andrea displayed great boxing to go along with her always outstanding footwork and avoided some very creative counters from Rachel.

Ostovich landed spinning back fists and kicks but was outmatched by Andrea. KGB landed a vicious kick to the body of Rachel which is what set up the rest of the fight; as you could tell Ostovich had trouble breathing later on. Rachel was still game going into the later rounds, but it was all KGB. At the end of each round, Andrea was either on the back or on top of Rachel and wins a very impressive unanimous decision. It’s nice to see KGB get the win and prove she is still one of the top 125ers in the world.

Cindy Dandois (6-2) withstood the early assault of the rangy Megan Anderson (4-2) and took her to the mat early. She repeatedly went for a triangle attempt, and Anderson was able to survive the first round. The second started the same as Cindy went head first into the action not affected by the strikes of Anderson. She eventually took Megan to the canvas again and worked for the triangle once again. She was able to pull it off and give the young Australian fighter a loss in her Invicta debut.

Both Sharon Jacobson (4-1) and Jamie Moyle (3-1) brought the heat in a very tough fought battle in the strawweight division. Jaime got the advantage early as you could tell her speed was making the difference. Sharon stayed true and looked to take down Jamie who fended off her first attempts. The second round is where Jacobson went to work and matched the striking of Moyle even though she was wobbled by headshot.

Deep in the second round is where Sharon slammed Jamie to the ground and used her pressure to dictate where the fight went. The third round was similar with constant pressure for Jacobson that she is becoming known for. In the end, Sharon wins by unanimous decision. Sharon continues to improve and once her striking catches up to her wrestling we could be looking at future champion in the strawweight division.

Invicta FC has a rumored card in November that will see curreent Invicta FC featherwieght champion Cris Justino fighting at 140 in a catchweight bout. Straweight Champion Livia Renata Souza will meet Alexa Grasso for the title as well.   Look for updates in the near future on the location of the card and matchups.
