Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com has reported that WWE originally had big plans for Alberto Del Rio's return at last year's Hell in a Cell PPV where he returned to the company as a surprise challenger to John Cena's United States open challenge.

Del Rio's stunning return to WWE

In his first match back in the company, he defeated John Cena for the United States Championship, in a match that lasted just under 8 minutes.

Del Rio's stunning win over John Cena seemingly suggested that he was going to get a big push, yet not 1 year has passed and Del Rio is already leaving the company.

Main event push?

WWE's original plans for Del Rio's return, however, were very different, as Dave Meltzer reports that he was supposed to be given a main event push with Paul Heyman as his manager but instead he was stuck with Zeb Colter, and we all know that was a disaster.

It is reported that Del Rio was going to be a top babyface in order to replace Rey Mysterio as WWE's top Hispanic star. Unfortunately, once Vince McMahon realized that pairing him with Zeb Colter wasn't a good idea, he effectively gave up on him and moved on to his next 'toy'.

This left Del Rio to join the League of Nations, a faction that had a lot of potential but instead just fell flat on its face due to terrible booking.

Now, just 10 months on from his return it is all but confirmed that he will now be leaving the company due to broken promises and no doubt wherever he goes he will be very successful as he was around the world before he made his return to WWE.
