Garbine Muguruza dominated Jelena Ostapenko, surrendering just five games on her way to the quarterfinals.
Muguruza makes fast start, doesn't look back on her way to first set win
The first three games of the match were long, combining to last 21 points. Muguruza was able to fend off an immediate challenge from Ostapenko, the Latvian getting to deuce on the Spaniard's serve, but no further. With that hold tucked away, Muguruza went to work on expanding her lead and she cashed in with a break in the very next game, her advantage now 2-0.
She fended off one more break point and after that brief scare, the remainder of the set was smooth sailing for the Wimbledon finalist. At 4-1 ahead, the Spaniard crafted another break when her outstanding defense forced Ostapenko to net a forehand, her advantage now at 5-1 and proceeded to serve the set out with ease to wrap up a tidy 6-1 opener.
Ostapenko improves play in second set, not enough to deny Muguruza quarterfinal spot
Ostapenko is coming off of two solid wins, defeating Kristina Mladenovic and Monica Puig and she made a bright start to the second set, jumping out to a 4-1 lead. She fought off a break point in her opening service game before posting a hold, reversing the pattern of the opening to the first set. After an easy hold in her next service game, she finally broke through on Muguruza's serve, needing three break points to do it, taking a 3-1 lead when she wrong-footed the Spaniard on a cross-court backhand.
A further hold strengthened her grip on the set at 4-1. Little did the Latvian know that would be the last game she would win in the match. Down 4-2, Muguruza forced the action again, getting the set back on serve when Ostapenko could only chop a two-handed backhand into the net. Another break was to come Muguruza's way at 4-all and she now was set to serve the match out. Her quarterfinal place was booked with a fine last game, one last Ostapenko backhand completely missing the mark, sending the Spaniard on her way.

Muguruza's 6-1, 6-4 victory over Ostapenko sets up a quarterfinal meeting with Timea Bacsinszky, conqueror in three sets of the draw's other remaining Spaniard, Carla Suárez Navarro. Muguruza will start as favorite going into her quarterfinal with Bacsinszky, a player she has never lost to.
