Carlo Ancelotti has praised his Everton side following their 0-0 draw with Liverpool in yesterday’s Merseyside derby.

The Toffees were heavy underdogs for the clash yesterday but Ancelotti has spoken highly of his side’s defensive performance against their city rivals.

Everton's defence earned them the point

After the game Ancelotti said:

“I think that we performed really well overall defensively, we were focused, we sacrificed. At the end we had opportunities to score and we were a little bit unlucky. But it doesn’t matter.”

“Liverpool played a good game and they had more possession, but defensively we were really good.”

“We had opportunities, we did our best. Calvert-Lewin did the best, Tom Davies did the best – we were only a little bit unlucky.”

Should they have won?

Everton came closest to scoring in the second half when midfielder Davies hit the post right after Alisson Becker saved from Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The draw leaves Everton in 12th place on 38 points, level with Newcastle. The Toffees still have an outside chance of qualifying for the Europa League and will certainly take positives from the game.

“I think the result is fair honestly. We have to be focused on the performance, it was good and for this reason we can be satisfied.”

Everton next match is against the Premier League’s bottom club Norwich on Wednesday.
