Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle has found life hard since the club's return to the Premier League in 2017, but he managed to score his first goal of the season in Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Aston Villa at St James' Park.

The forward was brought onto the pitch in somewhat fortuitous circumstances from a personal point of view as he came on to replace Matt Ritchie who had to be withdrawn with what looked to be a minor tissue injury.

But within moments Gayle had put his side in front midway through the second half and he now wants to push on and try and help his club push up the table in the coming weeks as the season draws to a close.

"I need to do more and get more minutes," Gayle said.

Ready to kick on

"It's been a frustrating season for me so far with injuries but I want to help out more.

"Hopefully I can help out the team much more over the next few weeks."

Having spent last season on loan in the Championship with West Bromwich Albion, the former Crystal Palace man appears to have one last shot at proving his worth in the English top-flight.

His delight at grabbing this goal with his first shot against West Brom's city rivals was evident and he revealed that it was a moment he'd been waiting for.

"It's been a long time coming for me," said a relieved Gayle.

"I'm happy to be back playing and me and Andy have been linking up quite well in training so it meant a lot for us to get an assist and goal between us.

Hopeful of more minutes

"It may have been a one-off and the players have been doing fantastic but hopefully we can keep making an impact off the bench to show the manager that we're all there to help out."

With this strike being the Gayle's first of the season, he surely would have been hoping that it turned out to be the winning goal.

However, Villa found an equaliser late on which was disappointing for the Newcastle players and Gayle clearly showed this within his post-match comments.

"I thought that we should have kept our lead to get the win," the striker admitted.

"It's another point and we played a steady game but perhaps didn't get it going but hopefully we can push up the table a lit bit more.

"There are a lot of games to come and it's going to be tough for the boys but I thought they put in a good performance."
