Manchester City booked their place in the Champions League quarter-finals in Lisbon after they saw off Real Madrid 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

It wrapped up a 4-2 aggregate victory for Pep Guardiola's men, who took advantage of some defensive howlers from Los Blancos, as Zinedine Zidane lost a Champions League tie for the first time in his managerial career.

Story of the match

Guardiola's men were looking for a fast start, and that is exactly what they got. Without Sergio Ramos on the night through suspension, Real Madrid were looking to the experienced Raphael Varane to step up and take command of that back four, but the Frenchman had a moment to forget inside the first ten minutes.

A poor touch inside his own box was capitalized upon by Gabriel Jesus, with the Brazilian squaring the ball for Raheem Sterling to tap home from close range to give the Citizens the perfect start.

Whilst it would've settled nerves on the blue half of Manchester, there was no change to proceedings for Real Madrid, who knew that they would still need to score twice to have any chance of progressing.

They found themselves level on the night in the 28th minute. Rodrygo getting the better of stand-in left-back Joao Cancelo before floating the ball in towards the head of Karim Benzema, with the Frenchman powering his header home to bring Madrid within one goal of being level in the tie.

Real Madrid's attempts to play out from the back were causing them all sorts of problems and the almost handed City another goal five minutes shy of half time.

Thibaut Courtois ball out from the back was intercepted by Kevin De Bruyne, who found Phil Foden on the edge of the box with his back to goal. The English youngster quickly turning and firing a shot goal bound which flew agonisingly wide of the right post as the sides entered the break level on the night.

City came out with a point to prove in the second half and almost retook the lead twice within the first 90 seconds. Sterling twice going close, with a big left hand from Courtois keeping out the in-form Englishman at the second time of asking.

Despite failing to find the back of the net, it was the start to the second half that the hosts needed as they began to dominate the run of play in the manner that you would expect from a Guardiola side, but despite their dominance, it was Madrid who were proving to be the masters of their own downfall.

A sloppy pass from Ilkay Gundogan denied the hosts the chance to retake the lead before Daniel Carvajal's desperate lunge prevented De Bruyne an opportunity on goal when he looked to be in.

But City did get the goal their dominance deserved in the 68th minute, again courtesy of a howler from Varane.

A sloppy backpass from the Frenchman was capitalized upon by Jesus, who beat Courtois to the loose ball before finishing sumptuously, with a delicate chip over the big Belgian to regain the host's two-goal advantage with little over 20 minutes to go.

And they never looked in danger of losing it as they cruised to the quarter-finals where they will meet Lyon, who upset Juventus to progress in the nights other last-16 tie.

An ideal result for Manchester City, who keep the mometum up ahead of that quarter final in Lisbon on Saturday.
