Tottenham Hotspurs are linked with a transfer move for Wolverhampton Wanderers right-back Matt Doherty according to Sky Sports.

The Republic of Ireland international has attracted interest from Jose Mourinho following an impressive 19/20 campaign keeping 12 clean sheets in 36 Premier League appearances.

The 28-year-old is reportedly valued at around £12 million, so is the fullback worth the price-tag?

An in-depth look at Doherty

It’s clear that Doherty is one of the better right-backs in the league right now, helping Wolves to a European quarter-final as well as a seventh-place finish in the league last season.

As well as having a successful campaign as part of a team, Doherty has also had a fantastic season individually, contributing directly to seven goals (four goals and three assists) in the Premier League.

The statistics show that Doherty is somewhat of a ‘modern fullback’, scoring an abnormally high amount of goals in comparison to the other full-backs in Europe’s top five leagues last season.

On top of being a threat going forward, Doherty is also thoroughly experienced with English football, arriving at Molineux Stadium in 2010. This includes 260 appearances for Wolves, including 75 games in the Premier League.

Does the transfer make sense?

It’s clear that Doherty is a good player, and considering the current climate around N17, it could be the perfect time for Spurs to sign the right back.

Serge Aurier has been heavily linked away with a move to AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen according to Sky Sports, with the Ivorians Spurs career seemingly at an end.

Combine this with Kyle Walker-Peters recent move to Southampton, and it makes for a distinct lack of options at the right-back position for Tottenham heading into the new season.

It’s a transfer that makes perfect sense from Mourinho’s end, but with Doherty starting as an essential player for Wolves, Nuno Espirito Santo will be hesitant to sell him.

However, with Wolves reportedly interested in signing Arsenal's Ainsley Maitland-Niles, that transfer could mean that Doherty is allowed to leave Molineux this summer.
