Stoke City host Reading as both sides look to get off to a winning start in their 2021/22 Championship campaigns.

Both sides had rather disappointing ends to last season, with Stoke finishing mid-table in 14th place, while Reading finished just outside the play-offs in seventh place.

Both teams have also lost a number of players from their respective squads, including the likes of Stoke's Nathan Collins and Reading's Michael Olise.

Hopefully there will be some goals scored in this game, as the last three times these two have met at the Bet365 Stadium, it has ended 0-0.

Team news

We could be seeing a couple of debuts for Stoke, with the likes of Ben Wilmot, Sam Surridge and Mario Vrancic tipped to start. Sam Clucas has started from the bench in recent friendlies, so the same is expected for this game. There is potential for Harry Souttar not to start as he only recently came back from representing Australia at the Olympics.

Reading will be without the likes of Yakou Meite and Felipe Araruna, with Meite out for the first few months of the season, while Araruna hasn't quite reached full fitness after recovering from a knee injury. Femi Azeez could be set to make his first league start for the Royals.

Predicted lineups

Stoke:

Bonham; Batth, Souttar, Wilmot, Smith, Doughty, Allen, Powell, Vrancic, Surridge, Fletcher.

Reading:

Rafael; Yiadom, Morrison, Moore, McIntyre, Laurent, Rinomhota, Azeez, Swift, Ejaria, Joao.

Ones to watch

Ben Wilmot

The centre-back has recently joined from newly-promoted Watford and has had an instant impact in pre-season. He was brought in for a fee believed to be around the one million mark, as a replacement for the departing Collins.

After helping Watford to promotion last season, Stoke will hope he can do the same for the Potters.

Femi Azeez

20-year-old Azeez has been one of the positives from the Royals' pre-season, with good performances against West Ham United and Brighton & Hove Albion. He starred for the U23's last term, scoring 10 goals in 17 games, with those performances earning him his Championship debut at the end of last season.

With his raw pace and trickery, he could be the latest player to shine coming from Reading's academy.

Previous meetings

The last time these two met was back in February where they played out a 0-0 draw for the third consecutive season.
