England 2-1 Turkey: Vardy nets winner to give Three Lions win in opening friendly

Jamie Vardy scored a late winner to secure England a 2-1 friendly win against Turkey at the Etihad Stadium, giving Roy Hodgson's men the perfect start to their Euro 2016 preparations.

Harry Kane gave England the lead in the third minute of the game with a lovely finish. Turkey hit back though 11 minutes later when Hakan Calhanoglu scored Turkey's first ever goal against England.

Kane went on to miss a penalty in the second half for England but Vardy scored the winner seven minutes from time to ensure England got off to a winning start in the first of three friendlies before Euro 2016.

Kane gave England a third-minute lead

England started the game on the front foot and scored the opening goal three minutes in when Dele Alli found his Tottenham Hotspur team-mate Kane in acres of space in the box and the striker calmly stroked the ball into the net.

Turkey though went in search of an equaliser straight away and forced Joe Hart into two good saves which were crucial to make sure that his side kept the lead. The game began at a very fast pace with both teams going on the attack to try and assert their dominance.

Calhanoglu got Turkey back on level terms

Turkey did get their equaliser though in the 14th minute through Calhanoglu who put the ball into an empty net to score Turkey's first ever goal against England. The ball in behind the England defence caught everyone out and Hart was left stranded as the ball was passed to Calhanoglu who put it into the net.

England went close soon after the equaliser as Jack Wilshere seen his shot well saved by Turkey goalkeeper Volkan Babacan and then Eric Dier saw a header from a corner go inches wide of the goal.

The rest of the first half saw both teams try to score but failing to create many chances as it was more of a battle in the midfield with both teams cancelling each other out.

Turkey came out the stronger team at the start of the second half with Cenk Tosun going close on two occasions within the first ten minutes. The striker firstly had a header which just went wide and then a shot that went just wide of Hart's goal.

Kane misses a penalty before Vardy scores the winner

England finally came to life in the second half when Jamie Vardy got in behind the Turkey defence and was brought down in the box by Turkey captain Mehmet Topal. Kane stepped up to take the penalty but he missed as he hit the outside of the post.

The penalty miss didn't matter too much as Vardy put England back into the lead seven minutes from the end of the game. Gary Cahill headed a corner towards goal but it was blocked on the line but Vardy was there for the rebound smashing the ball home to make it three goals in last three appearances in an England shirt.

Kane almost added a third for England before the end of the game but the striker saw his shot go just wide of the goal after Vardy had played it to him inside the box.

Hart was then called into the action in the last minute of stoppage time making a brilliant save to preserve England's win.

England play their second of three friendlies before the Euros against Australia on Friday the 27th May.
