Chelsea: What It Means

On the other hand, while this was evidently a good result for Chelsea, as any away win in the Champions League is, it was far from their best performance this season.

They looked sluggish at times and ought to have troubled Dahlin in the opposite goal who regularly appeared shaky, instead opting to pass around their defence.

However, getting the three points is the priority and in doing so they've put the pressure on Juventus to get past Zenit tonight and maintain their lead at the top of Group H.

Malmo: What It Means

For Malmo, while it was another loss in this season's Champions League group stage, it was arguably their strongest performance thus far.

They put up a good fight throughout, limiting the Blues to just the one goal and offering a little taste of their own attack on the counter at times too.

That said, the result is what counts in the end and not picking up a point means they remain bottom of the group, now with a goal difference of -12.

Match Summary

The first half was something of a training ground drill for the most part, with Chelsea continually making into the final third but unable to break down their opponent.

A breakthrough did finally come in the 56th minute after Callum Hudson-Odoi fired in a pinpoint cross to Hakim Ziyech and he tapped home with ease.

From that point onwards it was again Chelsea fully in control, rarely losing the ball but also not threatening a second particularly often either.

Overall, Tuchel will simply see it as a good win on the road, and whole it might not have been the best performance by his side, that's what it was in the end.

Player of the Match: Callum Hudson-Odoi

There weren't any spectacular performances from Chelsea players tonight but the one man who does deserve a mention is Callum Hudson-Odoi.

The English winger put in a perfect ball for Hakim Ziyech to score the only goal of the game and was creative at other times too, so he's the man of the match for me.

FULL TIME: Malmo 0-1 Chelsea

That's that in Sweden and Chelsea will travel home with all three points after a relatively comfortable performance.

It took a while for the opening goal to come, but it was a delightfully worked move ending with Ziyech putting the ball in the net.

From then on they saw out the game with ease, and while they put up a good fight Malmo never truly threatened the Blues' defence.

It's so close to a second goal for the Blues after an immaculate move in which Loftus-Cheek controlled the ball wonderfully before playing Havertz in.

Yet again though Dahlin denies the German and it remains just the one for Chelsea.

19:17a month ago

73: Malmo 0-1 Chelsea

It's another set of substitutions in Sweden, this time for both sides.

Ziyech comes off for Barkley and Hudson-Odoi leaves the field in place of Christian Pulisic, making his first appearance since his injury in August.

As for Malmo, Nalic replaces Nanasi, who's had a decent game for the hosts.

GOAL! Malmo 0-1 Chelsea

It's a well-worked goal from the Blues who finally, at long last, are ahead.

Hudson-Odoi puts in an absolutely pinpoint ball towards Ziyech who has the easiest of tasks to tap the ball home.

They've deserved it, but it's taken a while to come.

A view from Chelsea fans

Let's see what Blues' fans thought of that first half performance from their side...
18:36a month ago

Blues knocking on the door but Malmo holding firm

They might not be ahead yet but Tuchel's side have undoubtedly been on top throughout the entire game.

Their main problem has been the fact they appear to be refraining from shooting which, against a goalkeeper who appears shaky at best, would be a good place to start.

As for Malmo, they've defended relatively well but, more significantly, they've also had a few chances of their own on the counter attack.

We're in for a fascinating second half.

Tuchel on Chilwell and James being absent

The German boss has made it clear that the fact they aren't included is nothing to worry about and simply the result of general rotation.

'It was a tough one because they've been playing so good for us ... but at the same time it's a very intense position, you cover the whole side up and down.'

Colak returns for Malmo

After missing their previous game against Sirius in the Allsvenskan, Antonio Colak is back in the starting eleven for Malmo tonight.

The the Croatian striker is arguably the Swedish side's most dangerous player and could pose a threat tonight if he gets a chance.

That said, simply getting an opportunity will be difficult against what is one of the best defences in Europe - either way, the battle will be fascinating.

A change in midfield for Chelsea

Looking at the visitors' team, one of the main things to note is that of Ruben Loftus-Cheek coming into midfield alongside Jorginho.

The Englishman has become a much more significant part of the squad recently under Thomas Tuchel and he's put his confidence in him again tonight.

Malmo will need to be at their best to stop a combination that comprises both enormous experience and also energetic youth too.

Malmo vs Chelsea Prediction

This won't be the easiest game Chelsea will play this season but, with all due respect to Malmo, it won't be far off of it either.

They looked incredibly comfortable during their previous 4-0 win against them, but do have a few more injuries going into this one.

Therefore, I'm opting for a 3-0 win for the Blues, though if Malmo come out fighting it may be a while before the opening goal goes in.

16:16a month ago

Latest games between Malmo and Chelsea

These two sides have only met each other three times in their entire histories, all of which have come within the last  three years.

The first was back in February 2019, during a Europa League Round of 32 match, which the Blues won 2-1 in, away in Sweden.

That was followed up a week later by a 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge, with goals from Olivier Giroud, Ross Barkley and Callum Hudson-Odoi that night.

Finally, the most recent matchup was just a couple of weeks ago when Thomas Tuchel's team cruised through as 4-0 winners in Group H of the Champions League this season.

16:11a month ago

Key player from Chelsea - Ruben Loftus-Cheek

After being something of a loan outcast under previous manager Frank Lampard, Ruben Loftus-Cheek is now back in the side under Thomas Tuchel.

Having impressed in recent games, the Englishman is expected to start this one and could make a statement for his place in the starting eleven.

He's already got two assists to his name in just eight appearances, five of which have been off the bench, so he's one to watch during this game.

Key player from Malmo - Antonio Colak

Arriving from PAOK FC during the summer transfer window on loan, striker Antonio Colak has made an excellent start to life at Malmo.

The Croatian has scored in impressive 13 goals in 23 appearances, being the joint second-highest scorer in the Swedish league.

He might struggle against what has been one of Europe's best defences this season, but the 28-year-old can certainly cause some problems.

Chelsea: Keeping pace with the leaders

As for Chelsea, they've had a mostly successful first half of group games so far, only dropping points once to arguably the toughest opponent in Juventus.

That result means they are three points behind the Italian leaders and will want to keep pace with them ahead of their meeting at Stamford Bridge in a few weeks' time.

For now, their concentration will be on Malmo who, while the Blues defeated them 4-0 a fortnight ago, should not be totally underestimated.

Malmo: Still looking for their first points

For Malmo, the first three games of this Champions League season haven't been the most enjoyable experience for the club.

They've lost all three of their opening games, not picking up a single point while also shipping 11 goals against them without scoring a single one.

That said, two of those three aforementioned fixtures have come away from home, so with this one on their own turf they'll be looking to at least get a point, despite the tough opponent.
