In-form Blackburn Rovers forward Jordan Rhodes has been named the Championship's Player of the Month for September after a typically prolific month.

The Scotland international, 25, underlined his importance to Rovers by scoring five of their seven league goals over the coarse of the month, despite only recently returning to action after an ankle problem.

Bowyer delighted with star man

The award is unlikely to come as any surprise to his manager Gary Bowyer, who earlier this week waxed lyrical about the hard-working nature of his star forward.

And now, speaking to the Football League's official website, Bowyer reiterated that the award was "richly deserved" due to "the amount of work he does on the training pitch".

While he was keen to note that the rest of his squad deserved credit for the number of chances they had created, Bowyer also claimed that there is simply "nobody better to get on the end of them".

Free-scoring Rhodes adds to his reputation

Rhodes last failed to hit the 20-goal mark in the 2008-09 season and with seven already this term, he looks likely to continue enhancing his reputation as one of the finest goalscorers in the Football League.

However, this is the first time the Scotsman has won the award as the Championship's best player.

Yet, despite the enduring excellence of Rhodes, it looks as though Blackburn will be needing all of the firepower they can get if they are to mount any sort of play-off challenge.

After losing strike partner Rudy Gestede to Aston Villa over the summer - and cutting it fine with Rhodes during a long-running transfer wrangle with Middlesbrough - Rovers struggled to put together any real run of consistency at the start of the season and currently find themselves down in 15th, though they are now unbeaten in their last four.

Vincenti and Gash take Football League awards

Lower down the divisions, Rochdale's goalscoring midfielder Peter Vincenti claimed the League One player's award, with Barnet forward Michael Gash taking the trophy home in League Two.
