Newcastle United picked up just their second victory of the season as they defeated Leeds United 1-0 at Elland Road.

Jonjo Shelvey scored the only goal of the match in the 75th minute as the Magpies won for the first time since early December and are 18th in the Premier League table.

Defeat for Leeds was their first in three league matches, but they still sit 15th, seven points clear of the drop zone heading into the international break.

​​​​​Newcastle were on the front foot in the opening stages of the match as Joe Willock fed Joelinton inside the penalty area, the Brazilians effort going just wide.

The hosts then created their first chance of the contest as Raphinha's cutback found Dan James, his shot denied by the hand of Martin Dubravka.

Mateusz Klich's shot flashed across the six-yard box before Raphinha fired just over the crossbar after getting to the edge of the box.

The only shot on target for the visitors nearly resulted in the opening goal as Shelvey saw his volley from the edge of the area pushed away by Whites goalkeeper Ilian Meslier.

In the second half, the hosts continued to pile on the pressure as Jack Harrison found space in the box to shoot, Fabian Schar getting in a key block. James scuffed the follow-up attempt.

At the other end, Sean Longstaff went wide and newly I acquired Chris Wood teed up Ryan Fraser, who also went wide by the left post.

Newcastle finally found the breakthrough with quarter of an hour to go. Javier Manquillo completed a splendid run down the left before he was fouled.

Shelvey took the free-kick and curled his shot past Meslier and into the bottom-left corner.

The visitors looked to double their advantage as Allan Saint-Maximin teed up Fraser, who went wide of the right-hand post and Meslier saved from Willock.

Leeds looked to attack in the closing stages, but the Newcastle defense held firm to pick up a first away win since May.
