The Champions League is nothing if not dramatic. Tottenham found themselves on the wrong side of the show last night, as Harry Kane's 95th minute winner - which had sparked mad celebrations for the home side - was subject to an agonising 4-minute VAR check, before eventually being ruled out.

The goal, which would have confirmed Spurs' place in the knockout stage, was disallowed as Kane's kneecap was adjudged to have been ahead of the ball as Emerson Royal nodded it down. Their players and staff were apoplectic, and Antonio Conte was sent off for his protests in the ensuing chaos.

Still visibly furious as he entered the room for his post-match press conference, Conte was, predictably, not best pleased about what he had just witnessed. The Italian answered just a single question before storming off again.

Here's every word of his tirade.

"At the end, all the people came onto the pitch and the referee decided to send me off. Only for this.

"I think that there are moments that maybe you can be a bit intelligent to understand. You have just disallowed a regular goal. Because the goal was regular - the ball is in front of Kane. And then the VAR... You know that I don't comment on the referee's decisions, but the VAR this season, I don't know why... between Premier League and Champions League, we are not so lucky, not so lucky.

"Until now we are also the only team that [had to] repeat a penalty. And every penalty I go to see if the 'keeper moves on the line, and I see [that] a lot of times. I want to see a repetition of penalties in [the] Premier League.

"I think that we are not so lucky with the VAR but I think they create bigger damage. I [would] like to see if this type of decision, you can take with a top team, in an important game. I would like to see if the VAR is so brave to take this decision - I repeat, unfair decision, because the ball is in front of Kane...

"Sorry but I am really, really upset. Sometimes you can accept the situation, sometimes I think it is not good because I don't see honesty in this type of situation. When I don't see this I become really upset.

"Then, for the game, I think the first half we played low intensity and Sporting Lisbon deserved to stay 1-0 up. At the end of the game after our second half I think we deserved to get three points. But now, for this decision, we have to wait [for] the last game against Marseille.

"I repeat, this decision created big damage. I hope the club [will] understand this, and then in the right situation, speak with the people they have to speak to. Because otherwise there is only the manager to speak, I think the club has to be strong, and because I repeat - this situation creates big, big damage.

"Now we don't know what [will] happen next week. If we go out... and then, I want to see."

And with that, he was gone.

Tottenham must now take a point from their final group game in Marseille next week in order to go through. That will be no easy feat in what will likely be a febrile atmosphere, especially given that their hosts will themselves have to win.

Should Spurs come up short, one would imagine that Conte won't have forgotten what happened at White Hart Lane on Matchday 5.
