Portsmouth came from behind to defeat National League North side Hereford 3-1 in the first round of the FA Cup at Edgar Street.

Miles Storey put the sixth-tier Bulls ahead in the 26th minute against a side 81 places above them.

Seven minutes later, Reeco Hackett levelled and second-half goals from Colby Bishop and substitute Joe Piggott ensured Pompey progressed to the second round.

Story of the match

In the third minute, a corner by Clark Robertson was only partially cleared by Hereford and Ryan Tunnicliffe's shot was diverted into the arms of Dale Eve by Connor Ogilvie.

Some neat play on the left saw Harry Pinchard link up well with Tyrone Barnett and he created some space for a shot that was ultimately blocked.

Hackett showed some quick feet inside the area, but good defending Aaron Amadi-Holloway saw him deny the Portsmouth frontman.

Storey looked to make progress in the 11th minute, but was halted and Pompey goalkeeper Josh Griffiths was then called into action, saving a cross by Pinchard under his own crossbar.

At the other end, Eve did well to deny the dangerous Hackett.

The hosts appealed for a penalty as Barnett brought down following a free-kick sent in by Kane Thompson-Sommers, but play was waved on.

Jay Mingi was then shown a yellow card following a hefty challenge on Pinchard and his subsequent strike from outside the area was stopped by Griffiths.

On 25 minutes, a defensive error by Hackett allowed Storey to pinch possession and race away to slot past Griffiths and give Hereford a shock lead.

Mingi atoned for his earlier booking by setting up the equaliser. After a Bulls move broke down, he found Ogilvie, whose ball in was nodded down by Ronan Curtis for Hackett, who lashed home.

Just before halftime, Josh Koroma swung in a corner from the right that was met by Bishop, but he sent his header down into the turf and wide.

The beginning of the second half saw Jack Evans make a well-timed challenge against Mingi inside the area before blocking a shot by Bishop.

On the hour mark, a cut-back by Zak Swanson was intended for Curtis, but Orrin Pendley did well with a fine block.

Portsmouth manager Danny Cowley made a double change as Curtis and Mingi were replaced by Pigott and Tom Lowery.

Four minutes later, Pompey were in front. A corner from Robertson was met by the head of Bishop and he diverted past Eve.

The Hereford shot-stopper was called upon again as Bishop got in behind the defense and the Bermudan punched clear, but another Robertson corner was touched home by Pigott from a Bishop flick to double Portsmouth's lead.

In the closing moments, a foul by Luke Haines gave the visitors a free-kick that Koroma curled on goal, but Eve got down well to deny him. Pendley was then caught out, but Jordan Thompson took the ball away from Curtis as he was preparing to shoot.

In stoppage time, a Pompey free-kick was cleared to safety, but the League One outfit were safely through.
