Premier League new boys Middlesbrough have won their second pre-season friendly, with a 2-0 victory over Doncaster Rovers.

Hundred percent record maintained

Aitor Karanka's side were looking to carry on from their 6-0 win over York City, the game at the Keepmoat Stadium also saw the introduction of Marten de Roon and Viktor Fischer who made their debuts.

Local boy Stewart Downing got the proceedings underway, with his first shot on goal been well saved by Ross Etheridge.

However, the goalkeeper couldn't do anything when Downing gave the away side in the lead, with his effort been deflected in off Andy Butler.

Joe Pugh came close to getting an equaliser which was the only real other opportunity in the first half, with Karanka deciding to change the whole side at the beginning of the second period.

Academy prospect Alex Pattison almost rewarded his managers faith instantaneously, with his effort going just wide.

However he didn't have to wait long to add the second and final goal, with Pattison curling home from 12 yards.

All about fitness

Boro are well into their preparations ahead of their return to the English top-flight, but Karanka said that the friendlies are all about the fitness of his players.

He told mfc.co.uk: “It hasn't been the best game to watch" but "we add another training session and arrive home again without injuries."

Karanka continued: "We are working hard, and have a lot of new players who weren't’t here last season" and thinks "for that reason, it’s difficult to train tactics" but says the side are "thinking more about the physical side.”

Talking about his new signings, Karanka concluded: "We told them before they came they that they were arriving to a really good squad."

Middlesbrough will take on Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday, July 30 with kick-off at 3pm BST.
