Aston Villa delivered one of their worst performances in a doomed season, losing 0-6 at home to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

Two nil down by half-time, Remi Garde's men shipped four more in the second 45, losing by their biggest home margain since before the Second World War. The result leaves Villa bottom of the table, eight points from safety.

It had been a slow start at Villa Park, possibly offering Villa fans hope that they might get some scrappy points, even without Rudy Gestede, who many had labelled as Liverpool's kryptonite. However, the first goal did go in after 16 minutes, the away team scoring it.

Sturridge and Milner set Liverpool clear

Scoring on his first start since returning from injury, Daniel Sturridge grabbed his third against Villa this season. Philippe Coutinho, back from the sidelines himself, was the provider, Sturridge heading home from an excellent cross.

Less than 10 minutes went by, before the second goal went in. There wasn't much quality to it, but goalkeeper Mark Bunn might feel disappointed, as James Milner's curling free-kick evaded everyone before landing in the corner.

Villa fans had seen the stuffing knocked out of their team, and whilst they managed to keep the score at two until half-time, there was little improvement. Jürgen Klopp's men did seem to ease off the gas for a while, with Jordan Henderson sending an effort just wide before the referee blew for the interval.

Goals soon followed upon the resumption of play, but not before Villa saw Gabriel Agbonlahor forced off with a knock, with Scott Sinclair coming on. Agbonlahor may well join fellow strikers Libor Kozak and Rudy Gestede on the sidelines for Villa's next game, with Jordan Ayew still suspended.

Three in seven minutes for thrilling visitors

Emre Can added a third just as Agbonlahor was forced off, after the Reds did well to regain possession in the hosts' half. Can, who has been criticised for a lack of goals this season, put those worries to bed by lashing into the bottom corner from 25 yards.

That was the first of three goals in a seven minute spell for the Reds, with Villa put firmly to bed. Divock Origi replaced Sturridge, and raced beyond the home defence to tuck the ball past Bunn just 37 seconds after entering the fray.

It was a miserable day for Bunn, who has been rather impressive since replacing Brad Guzan as Garde's number one choice. He did do better for the fifth goal, saving from Nathaniel Clyne on 65 minutes, only for the full-back to net from the rebound.

Woeful Villa allow Toure to get in on the act

There was still time for Liverpool to make things even worse for Villa's home support, with an unlikely scorer making it six. Kolo Toure, the man who bundled a header home from a corner with around 20 minutes to go.

There was one home highlight for those that remained until the bitter end, and there weren't many. Joleon Lescott somehow found himself on the edge of the area, setting up substitute Sinclair to curl an effort onto the crossbar.
