Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino has been awarded with the PFA Player of the Month for January, winning the award for the first time since moving to Merseyside.

Competing with 11 other in-form Premier League players, Firmino came out on top, narrowly beating off Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane to the prize. The Brazilian won 40.2% of the public's vote, with Rooney and Kane gathering 36.4% and 26.2% respectively.

Firmino was magical in January

Firmino enjoyed a brilliant opening month of 2016, scoring four times and assisting once in January, and proving influential in a number of dramatic matches.

Scoring twice against Arsenal at Anfield, he put the Reds ahead twice before the match eventually finished 3-3 thanks to a last minute equaliser from Joe Allen. One of Firmino's goals was particularly impressive, as he picked out Petr Cech's top corner from the edge of the penalty area.

There was more drama to come, as Firmino played a huge role in Liverpool's rollercoaster win against Norwich City. Having put his team ahead in the 18th minute, Firmino was soon on the losing side, with Norwich going three one up. However, after providing a brilliant assist for captain Jordan Henderson to make it 3-2, Firmino dinked the ball over Declan Rudd for the equaliser, enabling the Reds to eventually go on and win the game 5-4.

Those around the Brazilian must now up their game

It's fair to say that Firmino is finally starting to live up to his reputation as an exciting attacker, following a disappointing first few months on Merseyside after his summer transfer from Hoffenheim.

Whilst he excelled in January, Liverpool were inconsistent, winning three games, losing three and drawing three. Things haven't got much better so far in February, with one loss and a draw, but they've got five more games to put things right, starting away to West Ham on Tuesday evening
