Fourth seed Paula Badosa was the latest high seed to exit the tournament as the Spaniard fell to Croatia's Petra Martic 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-2.

Aryna Sabalenka saved two match points and rallied from 6-2, 5-1 down to topple Kaia Kanepi 2-6, 7-6 (8) while ninth seed Muguruza had little trouble with qualifier Linda Fruhvirtova, winning 6-0, 6-4.

Azarenka defeated Marta Kostyuk 6-2, 6-3 with the Ukrainian refusing to shake the three-time finalist's hand due to her silence on the current war in Ukraine.
