2022 US Open Day 6 women's recap: Parade of big names reach the Round of 16

Third-round play at the 2022 US Open concluded with action from the top half of the women's draw.

Top seed Iga Swiatek along with former major champions Petra Kvitova and Victoria Azarenka were among the eight players to book spots in the fourth round.

Swiatek to face Niemeier, Pliskova and Azarenka set up clash after third round wins

Swiatek battled past American Lauren Davis with the Pole coming out on top 6-3, 6-4 in a match that was tougher than the scoreline indicated.

"I could not find my rhythm today", she acknowledged. " She played pretty smart. I'm happy at the end that I could put balls in.

"I'm just trying to enjoy any match, even when I'm not perfect."

Her fourth round opponent will be Jule Niemeier as the big-hitting German outslugged Qinwen Zheng, hitting 22 winners to 12 for the Chinese.

Pliskova overcame 13th seed Belinda Bencic 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in two and a half hours to set up a blockbuster clash with three-time finalist Victoria Azarenka.

The 26th seed won the final nine games of her 6-2, 6-0 demolition of Petra Martic, firing off 22 winners against the Croat.

"I felt like I started very solid and I kind of kept my foot on the gas pedal and just really kept raising my intensity, game after game", she said.

"I felt that I played really good in also important moments. On break points, I really took my chances, was really effective from defense to offense. I think that worked really well."

Collins, Sabalenka, Pegula, Kvitova round out fourth round lineup

Danielle Collins is into the second week at the US Open for the first time in her career following a 6-4, 7-6 (9) victory over Alize Cornet.

"Honestly, I'm having the time of my life", she said. "This is what we dream of as a kid, playing these night matches."

The 19th-seeded American will next face Aryna Sabalenka as the sixth seed dominated qualifier Clara Burel 6-0, 6-2.

Petra Kvitova saved two match points against Garbine Muguruza to return to the Round of 16 in New York for a seventh time with a 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (12-10) win.

Eighth seed Jessica Pegula moved on after holding off qualifier Yue Yuan 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-0 and will look for her first career win over Kvitova in three meetings.
