Newcastle fought back into the game after Sergio Aguero gave City the lead early in the first half however they were unable to find the winning goal.

Bright start from both sides

Both teams started the game strongly, with City having a few good opportunities early on as De Bruyne and Navas had dangerous crosses cleared out of the box by the Newcastle defence.

Newcastle responded to the early pressure from City with a counter attack of their own, as Townsend crossed in from the right hand side only to have his cross headed over the bar by Cisse

City controversially take the lead

Just fourteen minutes into the game Andros Townsend was penalised on the right hand side of the box and it was from this free-kick that City were to take the lead.

Kolarov delivered a cross into the box which was headed in by on form Sergio Aguero, however replays showed that the Argentine was standing in an offside position even before the ball was played into the box.

A toon response

Fifteen minutes after Aguero gave Manchester City the lead it was an unlikely source of goals in Vurnon Anita who got Newcastle right back into the game.

Sissoko had played in the Dutchman and Anita played the ball along the ground and it went in off the post to give Newcastle a much needed equaliser.

Penalty for City?

Within 5 minutes of the second half Sergio Aguero had a great chance to give Manchester City the lead for a second time but he could not turn and get a shot away, and instead went down and appealed for a penalty but the referee Kevin Friend wasn't interested in the protests.

Despite the penalty being waved away replays showed that City may have had a case for a penalty although it was deemed nothing more than to be a tangle of legs.

Newcastle pressure

Alexsander Mitrovic came on for Newcastle 10 minutes into the second half and from that point on the Toon piled on the pressure on City.

Ayoze Perez had a chance to whip the ball into the box but Joe Hart was there to claim and just minutes after he forced a corner but the home side couldn't carve out an opportunity. Newcastle's big chance to take the 3 points came 2 minutes from time, as Wijnaldum's shot was saved by Joe Hart and he could only hit the side netting with the rebound.

1 point gained or 2 points lost?

Newcastle really turned up at St James' Park tonight and may have feel cheated out of 3 points due to Aguero being in an offside position for his goal but Rafa Benitez men can take confidence from their performance tonight into their next game against Liverpool on Saturday at Anfield.

The Toon will stay in the relegation zone after tonight's result and sit in 19th position 2 points from safety and 1 point behind bitter rivals Sunderland who have played a game less.
