Chelsea Women signed Magdalena Eriksson on this day three years ago from Swedish side Linköpings

The defender has endured a successful era at Chelsea, with more memories pending for the number 16 in West London.

Eriksson joined Chelsea off the back of four years at Linköpings, where she won the Damallsvenskan in 2016 and the Svenska Cupen twice.

Three joyous years

There may have not been international success for Eriksson, but the domestic success has been joyous since the move to England

When the former Linköpings defender made the move to Chelsea, she told SheKicks magazine: “I hope I can help the team to achieve even more greatness and I cannot wait to be part of the Chelsea family.”

She has for sure signed her name in the history books for Chelsea Women after winning the double in her debut season. Winning the Women’s Super League and the Womens F.A. Cup highlighted why manager Emma Hayes wanted to add Eriksson to the side. The Swedish defender has made a habit of winning trophies at Kingsmeadow stadium.

Eriksson, who idolised Carlos Puyol growing up, told Chelsea TV that winning the double in her first season is the main highlight of her career.

Last season had to be cut to a premature end due to the Coronavirus. Chelsea and Eriksson still managed to win the F.A. Womens League Cup and was handed the ‘WSL’ on a points per game ratio after the league was suspended due to the pandemic.

The skipper signed a contract extension in 2018, which will see her contract expire at the end of next season. The extension was handed for the impressive performances in blue, helping Chelsea to the Champions League semi-final in her debut season.

Eriksson scored one of Chelsea’s goal of the season in the 2018/19 season. The current captain scored an overhead kick against Liverpool despite being used to defending goals. This will certainly be one of the highlights of her time at Kingsmeadow for the Swedish defender.

National icon

Away from Chelsea, Eriksson is also a World Cup bronze medallist. She played a major for Sweden after playing six out of seven matches. The number 16 also played a part at the Rio 2016 Olympics when her national side won Silver in South America

Chelsea Women returned to training Monday; Eriksson took to twitter to show her delight to be back playing.

Chelsea will hope to keep their Women’s Super League status next season. Emma Hayes has won the league three times in the past five years, Eriksson has been involved for the latest accolade and will hope to add to this next season.
