The season starts earlier than expected for Chelsea, but the Blues are eager to start competing for the six trophies available for grabs this season, starting with today's Community Shield.

The competition returns to the women's game after a 12 year absence for a closed door, double header with the men's Community Shield at Wembley.

Arsenal beat Everton 1-0 at Moss Road when the competition was last seen on the women's side in 2008.

Emma Hayes, is excited to start the season with England's best teams, in one of the world's most prestigious stadiums.

It's been six months side either side has played a competitive fixture and City's last match was the thrilling 3-3 FA WSL fixture at the Academy Stadium against Chelsea, crucial result which aided the Blues finishing WSL champions.

With the match being played behind closed doors, there is no pressure from fans or attendance numbers, but instead there should be more spectators watching at home and Hayes is prepared to show that they're the best.

  • On the return of the Community Shield

"To think that it hasn't been in place seems very strange, but to bring it back at a time when people least expect it? I think it's a great move by everybody.

"If we have the competition on the men's side, we should have it on the women's side."

Though Hayes believes double headers don't work when there are fans in the stadium and the intention gets lost, but playing behind closed doors, she sees it as the perfect opportunity to give everyone an afternoon of football.

  • Big signings in City and across the WSL

“Wow. They’ve spent a tremendous amount of money bringing in some unbelievable players and they’ve already been a top team.

"The way they’ve strengthened off the pitch, I’m sure their fan base will expect really big things from them.

"I expect that the competition between us will not change, it’s always neck and neck with everything.

“I’m just so excited to see all this top talent come to the U.K. and it will improve all of our players and games will be even closer because of the quality on show.

"This is what I wanted for the league. This is, for me, a dream scenario that every team is in with a great shout of winning.

"I’m just excited to watch the games and if I wasn’t coaching in it, I’m sure I’d be paying to come and watch it.”

  • High standard within the team

“Being in this environment, it’s not okay to ease off. You’ve got to be at your very best every day if you want to keep progressing and keep playing for the club.

“You’ve got to have standards that are adhered to and everyone is driving towards that. That’s in place, but I think I have a great group of people who are growing together.

“Because of that, the expectations they have for each other are so high that it’s the reason why we are in the position we are in.

“I’m always proud to represent fantastic people and a club that’s been so good to me, that has given me the platform to produce a team that everybody is proud of.

“I think Saturday is another opportunity to do that and I know that everybody within our club is so proud of our section.”
