Former Huddersfield Town man Elias Kachunga has joined Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer.

His career so far

Kachunga’s international career began with Germany’s youth teams at under 19 and under 21 level before he made the switch to DR Congo in 2017 to pursue his senior international career.

He spent the early stages of his career in Germany with the likes of SC Paderborn and Ingolstadt before then Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner attracted him to England for the 2016/17 season.

The DR Congo international signed on a season long loan and was key in the West Yorkshire sides promotion to the Premier League, scoring 13 goals and knocking Sheffield Wednesday out in the play-off semi-final along the way.

Kachunga made the switch permanent as The Terriers made the maiden voyage in the topflight, where he played a supporting role in their Premier League survival.

While the forwards stats fail to set the world alight with only a handful of goals in the last three campaigns, it should be noted that in his 150 games playing as a striker or as a number 10 he has racked up 46 goals and 22 assists, a solid return.

The 28-year-old became a fans favourite with Terriers fans during his four-year stay, accumulating well over 100 appearances in the process. He built a reputation of hard-work and a burning desire to succeed, their 2017 promotion in a nutshell.

Does he fit into a Monk side?

During the majority of his time at Huddersfield he was deployed out wide by Wagner. His greatest scoring season was his first in English football where he played a great deal more up front, a position where Garry Monk will more likely look to use his exploits.

The trait of hard-work and desire will have caught the eye of Garry Monk. Time and time again the Wednesday chief has echoed those very words in description of what he wants from his side.

Indeed, the new first team coach Andrew Hughes, who was with Kachunga during his time in West Yorkshire, played a major role in the deal.

He is believed to have signed a 1-year deal and his arrival will be another welcome addition, along with Josh Windass,  in an area where The Owls are so desperately lacking.
