Manchester City got their Premier League campaign off to a flyer as they held off a late Wolves charge to claim all three points at Molineaux.

Kevin De Bruyne penalty and a Phil Foden  sent Manchester City into the break-in command.

However, Wolves came out fighting in the second half and they halved the deficit ten minutes from time through Raul Jiminez' header.

But it proved to be Manchester City's night and they sealed the win through Gabriel Jesus' deflected effort late in injury time.

Story of the Match

Despite it being Manchester City's first game of the season, the 2018/19 Premier League champions knew that defeat would leave them six points behind Liverpool, who themselves have already played twice.

Wolves proved to be the undoing of Pep Guardiola's men on two occasions last season - picking up a 2-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium before a second-half comeback saw Wolves run out 3-2 winners at Molineaux on Boxing Day.

In spite of finishing a distant second to runaway Premier League champions Liverpool last season, Manchester City entered the new campaign as the bookmakers favourite to regain the Premier League title, and they got out of the traps quickly.

The visitors dominated possession from the get-go - enjoying 80% of the ball through the opening 10 minutes - and, despite seeing an early penalty appeal waved away, they were gifted the opportunity to open the scoring from the spot after 20 minutes after Wolves defender Romain Saïss carelessly brought down De Bruyne.

Manchester City had experienced major difficulties from the spot last season - failing to convert five of the 11 that they were awarded - but De Bruyne made no mistake on this occasion. Last seasons POTY firing the ball past Rui Patricio and into the bottom right corner.

The visitor's domination continued and they soon doubled their lead in impressive fashion. De Bruyne was once again at the heart of it, splitting the Wolves backline to find Sterling who selflessly cut the ball back into the box to find England teammate Phil Foden who calmly tucked the ball into the back of the open net.

It was one-way traffic in the first half and Wolves would consider themselves lucky not to be three goals down at the break. Gabriel Jesus' delicate headed flick-on put De Bruyne in behind but this time Patricio was equal to it, denying the Belgian at his near post.

Wolves offered very little going forward in the first half but looked much brighter in the second, with forward Daniel Pondence twice going close in the opening exchanges of the second period before Raul Jimenez fired wide from eight yards out on the hour mark.

It was a stark contrast to the opening period as Nuno's men looked the much more likely to add to the scoreline as they attempted to reverse a 2-0 deficit against City for the second time in as many seasons.

After a frantic opening 15 minutes in the second half, the pace of the game slowed down somewhat as Manchester City began to regain their dominance of possession.

The Citizens visitors went in pursuit of a third to well and truly kill the game off and they looked to have done exactly that when Jesus emphatically finished Fodens' through ball. However, replays showed that the Brazilian was a good few yards offside.

Wolves did find a way back into the match with just over 10 minutes to go. Some brilliant work by Pondence saw him skip past De Bruyne before whipping in a delightful ball that was met by Jiminez, who powered his header into the top corner, leaving Ederson with no chance.

It was a nervy final ten minutes for the Citizens but they put the game to bed in injury time when Jesus' deflected effort beat Patricio at his near post.
