A despondent Jurgen Klopp expressed his thoughts following an enthralling Merseyside at Goodison Park. The derby was overshadowed by some questionable decisions thrown the way of Klopp's side, something which had clearly left the Liverpool manager frustrated.

''Everyone tells me it was not offside but it does not lift my mood.''

Klopp was clearly left bemused by the decision to chalk off Jordan Henderson's late goal.

It just wasn't Liverpool's day. From start to finish they were the subject of questionable officiating, with Virgil Van Dijk forced off early into the first half following another controversial call from the VAR David Coote.

"Our goals were brilliant. I leave the pitch and Thiago tells me he thinks he was injured from Richarlison''

Liverpool's late leveller being ruled out dramatically changed the mood and the reflection of the Reds' performance.  It was the perfect bounce-back performance following the horror show that unfolded at Villa Park a fortnight ago.

Thiago and Henderson ran the show throughout the game, as Liverpool lined up with arguably their strongest midfield trio. Thiago was lucky to escape the wild challenge from Richarlison, without suffering any serious long-term injury.

''Virgil played so many games in a row but he couldn't play on, so it is not good."

It doesn't look good for Liverpool's No.4. Van Dijk now looks set for a spell on the sidelines ahead of what is a crucial few weeks for Liverpool as their Champions League fixtures come thick and fast.

With Alisson still sidelined with a shoulder injury, it could be a long and testing few weeks for Liverpool, without their two main defensive cogs.

''Gomez was outstanding. Good game, shame about the result."

Klopp was full off praise for Joe Gomez, who had struggled massively at Aston Villa. Many fans had called for him to be dropped ahead of the game, although he was only dropped for all of 10 minutes and he reacted perfectly to being summoned to partner Joel Matip

Matip and Gomez have had little experience as a partnership, however with Van Dijk's injury, it looks like we could see the duo called upon for the next few weeks.

''We did show a response today''

Klopp concluded his press conference by heaping praise on his side again. Klopp has always been someone who has been able to separate performance and result, when it matters.

The headlines in the national papers won't tell the full story of what  went on at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon. Liverpool can be disappointed they didn't get the result their performance merited. But they can confidently head into Wednesday's game against AJax, knowing they have fully put their Aston Villa blip behind them.
